Goin Shoe Shoppin' GEC's Gotta Stay Home :(

The clip snags something and knocks the knife out!

Yep, I still hope someone found mine and gave it a proper home after it wanted to stay somewhere on a mountain in the Swiss alps :)
Otherwise only 1 or 2 Victorinoxes got lost back in primary school.

Obviously you have not had an emergency sneeze, used the bandanna for its' original intended purpose, and launched a very expensive custom 20' across concrete:eek: I have, and can no longer recommend this practice:D Very hard on nice covers! Bolsters too!

I've not yet launched my knife flying in the manner but I could see it happening I'll admit:D I don't wrap my knife or anything else in my bandanna though, everything in that pocket just gets dropped to the bottom of the pocket like normal and then I push the bandanna down on top of them. The edges of it might fold downwards around the knife etc a lil bit, but not much, little enough that the weight of the objects prevent them from coming out with the bandanna. My stuff is probably not as secure this way, but I can't be bothered wrapping them up in the bandanna and having a harder time accessing them.

I do sometimes use my bandanna as a hanky in times of emergency though and as a rag as intended:) Some people think it a disgusting practice, but then shove used Kleenex back in their pockets. I don't get people *shrugs*

Back on topic for me though, to the OP, the pocket clip by it's nature puts the knife right near the edge of your pocket where it could fall out, so unless it's ultra tight I still wouldn't trust it. I'd trust a pocket clip to keep a knife handy to access, not to keep it in a pocket. Traditional and bandanna all the way:)

I say that's just the chance you take. Just be sure you own enough knives so there's no chance you'll run low. And if you do lose one be sure to buy another to replace it.;)

Yup :)

Only knife I ever lost was clipped to my pocket and all my cheap kitchen table chairs have a gouge from the clip scratching them when I sit down and get up. I started carrying the clipped knives in my back right pocket because they where blocking off my access to the rest of the things I carry. Then I lost a rather expensive knife one night and I started to re-evaluate things. I went to a smaller clipped knife first so I could still get in my pocket. Found I really didnt need the big flipper blades as the small ones cut everything I needed to. Next I found my old boyscout knife (slipjoint) in a box in the garage and well now the rest is history. I wear shorts most days, my clothes would be considered baggy by most here I am sure. Out of instinct now every time I stand up or sit down I check my pockets with a fast pat down. I check the back for wallet, left front for phone and feel around the right for my knife. I dont even think about it anymore it just happens and doesnt take away from my day. Now the kids are getting older and we can buy nicer furniture, I am not worried about dinging things up with a clip from the pocket ;)

I also agree with an earlier comment from Christian about sheaths, I would not want to be slowed down by having to retrieve it from a slip. Plus how can bone become pocket worn in a sheath? :D

I'm thinking about a pocket sheath, but not for my EDC that just stays loose in my pocket. I'd use it for a congress or whatever knife I'm going to get to keep on me for whittling, as it wouldn't be brought out often enough for me to worry about being slowed by the pouch, but the pouch might keep dirty and lint from working into the knife. My two blade jack loses its snap and needs to be cleaned out a bit more often than I'd like I notice. But then I don't whittle much away from home realistically, so I suppose it would be unnecessary and irrelevant.

Now if the sheath was a bit wider and stayed in place in my pocket, loose enough that I could reach and find and pull out my knife quickly and easily without having to remove my sheath, it would be worth it. That's what I'd like to try more. I really need to get around to buying some leather and making my own pocket sheath soon.

All great points indeed. I clean my edc's once a week because cutting stone(with a grinder, makes a lot of dust that penetrates my clothes) and being on job sites will make any of my knives dirty.

I really like this idea, thanks. If I could make something to house my pens and it have a loose pocket to hold my knife that I could leave in my pocket would be great. I hate how the ball of stuff that collects in my right front pocket becomes a big bulge by the end of the day not to mention I have to pull everything out to find what I want. I really need to get the smart phone out of my left pocket so I can split my goods around more.

Sturzi has an excellent picture of one he made in the How do you EDC your GEC thread, I think second or third post of that thread. Lots of people have made them, and they seem fantastic.

I have seen his but didnt think about the loose idea. Sometimes it takes a while for the light bulb to come on :)

I keep my wallet and knife in the same pocket. If you put the knife between the wallet and throw both in your pocket, the knife should be fine.

You could also try sheath carry :)

Nothing wrong with carrying differnet types of knives. I usually have a traditional and a modern on me at the same time.

I lost a knife. ONCE!

No definitely not, I carry both from time to time. I haven't had a modern clipped into my pocket in a few years now though.

Clip them to my camelback. Stuff like that.

I own far more modern knives than traditional, but I learn from my mistakes (after I make the same one a few times in a row :D ).

Thanks for all the pointers on carry guys, and I agree. I don't feel the need to try and justify only owning traditionals or only carrying them or something. I use what works best for me. EVERYTHING I own gets used. I can't afford to just have things I don't use. Don't have the space either!

Oh just work some more overtime and go on the ramen noodle diet... :D  (really been there though)

Kirkland jeans, sold by Costco have a huge watch pocket - they are calling it a "phone pocket."

These will easily handle a 4 1/4" folder.
