A young lady who is my daughters age (in fact a very close friend) is being deployed to Afganistan very shortly. I understand that she may be in the dirt this time. My question is what would be an appropriate going away gift for her? I'm referring to a EDC that would fit these kind of circumstances. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. And if you can be brand or model specific that would be even better! thanks for your help.

A folder is probably a good choice, along with a multi-tool. With all the gear she will have to carry, a fixed blade will just add to the weight.

-If you want to go with a fixed blade, an ESEE is probably one of the best choices. They have different sizes, the smallest being an Izula. That would probably be nice for her, along with the Micarta grips. The Izula has a few colors, like Orange, Black, Pink, etc.

-For a folder, I'd suggest a Spyderco Military or a Zero Tolerance knife. ZT's are built like tanks, and many people will agree with me when I say that. They military is very nice as well, but not as strong as a ZT.

-As for a Multi-Tool, a Leatherman, SOG, and the Victorinox Swiss Tool are good picks as well.

Just my opinion.

For a woman in the military, not too inexpensive and reliable, probably a small spyderco folder with a 3 inch or less blade. If you want something smaller and on the pricey side, a Chris Reeve Folder small sebenza. You can also give her a small fixed blade. Esee knife in a 3 inch would suffice or on the pricey side a Busse SAR 3. With any blade gift, you should also include a sharpening kit or sand paper and a strop with compound.

I would refrain from a bigger expensive blade, unless she is into it. She will most likely just store it in her foot locker if it gets in the way.

I know some branches of service will issue a multi-tool of some kind, but I cannot vouch for the make of quality of the 'standard issue'. Might not be a bad idea to get her a nice Leatherman tool just in case! Otherwise, a sturdy and relatively inexpensive folder would probably be a good choice: perhaps an Ontario RAT-1 or something from Cold Steel...

Very thoughtful of you, OP!

ESEE Izula here or if you want to spend a little more and buy a knife with the power of invincibility do a Busse/Scrapyard/Swamprat:

Scrap Yard Scrapivore = here...

or possibly a RMD = here

I'm not a good resource for quality folders but I have a leatherman tti and it has saved my bottom on more occasions than I can count.

I've spent over 4 years in Iraq and either carried a Strider SMF or a Rick Hinderer XM-18. You can buy pink scales to make it more "lady like".......both performed flawlessly for me in the harsh environment. Can't go wrong with ZT like Vanguard said, there considerably less in price than the two I mentioned.

Or just wrap it with pink 550 cord. :p

+1 for multi-tool. I used my multi-tool 500% more than I did my folder or fixed blade. But if you're set on getting her a knife, I'd suggest a folder under 4" with a pocket clip or a molle sheath.

I am going to say the ZT 0500 mudd. it is huge, has a locked pivot that will NEVER get dirt or sand in it, it will hold an edge pretty well, and if she ever gets sand in the pivot of a non, protected knife knife, she would have to worry about disassembling it. she would have no such trouble with this knife. it is very well built.

now, the only reason that I would not recommend this knife is if she has small hands. I love me some 0200, so I have big hands, and I loved the handle on the mudd.
the price is 165 for a blem. since this would be a user, I assume you would not mind the fact that it is a blem.
