Going back to cheaper knives.

Hey guys,
New member here. I carry about 5 Benchmades in rotation but the higher end stay in the safe. The older I get (and I'm old by most standards) I want to start carrying all of them before I kick the bucket. You can't take it with you as they say. It would be cool to carry my CR's and enjoy them. I'm not a rich guy but I buy quality knives..............learned that a long time ago. Thanks for letting me join this forum as I really love reading about knives and the different opinions. If I'm off base with this post let me know........

We all make these choices. I do it too. But I sometimes wonder what I am holding onto them for as few will appreciate them once I take that long snooze.

We've all had to consider that question at some time or another. I don't have any answers to offer up. Somewhere down the line our stuff is going to be sold by folks that couldn't care less about our efforts and sacrifices. Nothing we can really do about that.

I just simply can't justify owning, let alone carrying, a knife that costs more than my monthly truck payment. For me, the knife is primarily a tool, first and foremost. I can find a good quality tool for a reasonable price (for me that's between $50 and $150). Would I like a higher end knife in the $200 plus range? Sure would, and might eventually buy one. But I've got other places I like to spend my money.

But if that's someone else's gig, great. I'm sure they don't see the value in some of the things I spend my money on. Takes all kinds to make the world go round.

PS I want to add and addendum to this thought. I have always had a hard problem with knives that cost more than a decent gun. I know for the most part it is an individual making a custom knife but.......

^^ this describes my line of thinking to a tee.

I have no problem spending $600-$1000 on a good firearm, and carrying it everyday, even though I could spend 2/3 that and still be OK. Same with a good watch. I've got $50 Timex's that are rugged and reliable, but they get very little wrist time compared to the ones that cost 10x that (or more).

It''s all where you wanna spend your money. If that's on knives, more power to ya!

This going to sound like blasphemy but I actually sold my zt560 because I just never carried it. I have an irrational fear of losing knives over $70 so I don't really carry them. Ive also found that while higher end knives certainly offer better edge retention, stropping, steeling, and resharpening just don't really bug me all that much. And for around $70 you can still enjoy cpm154 (launch 5) s30v (manix 2) and d2 (new rat1 and avispa knives)

I wouldn't call that fear irrational. Could you imagine losing a $1000 knife?? Wars have been started for less.
BTW, I have a bunch of old Wyo friends in Eugene. I hear it's an awesome place

I run into some Victorinox paring knives on sale in store yesterday, and got 2 more.Amazing quality for price, and they cut way better than most offerings on market today.Would recomend these to anyone. My spydercos and benchmades are not even used or carried anymore.Opinel,Victorinox sak and paring knives are what I use.

Bowman you and I both have the same thought on that matter.

The sad part of it is that the above is both hilarious, and tragically correct.

I dont see myself going back to cheapoes, although ~$100 per knive would be expensive in my world.

"Cheaper" is a relative term. I started carrying a Swiss Army Knife when I was a kid. In high school I got Smith & Wesson knives on sale for $10ish at Big-5 which in retrospect were total crap but I thought were pretty cool at the time. I found a Spyderco when was hiking and that was my first quality knife. I had a SOG Flash II which was stolen at work in early college. Then I started carrying Kershaw made in USA blades. I bought a Shallot which I still carry on occasion. A number of years ago I got a Benchmade Barrage which I have carried pretty much every day since and beat the crap out of. It has made me a believer in good blades.

I bought a Cold Steel Large Voyager about a month ago. I have been carrying it rather than the Barrage and I like the feel but the steel is just not as good as the Benchmade and I find myself needing to retouch the edge from time to time. I will never go back to the cheap knives of my youth (Smith & Wesson) but I have started to carry some Kershaw again and added Cold Steel to the mix with the Voyager. I really liked the Shallot and just found a really good deal for one on a closeout today so I ordered it for a backup in case something happens to my old one since they have been discontinued.

In short, I sort of have gone back "cheaper" but not "cheap" and I am not abandoning my higher quality stuff either. That said, my most expensive knives ($165 range) are "cheap" to some and my value knives ($45-$75 range... Voyager, Shallot, Leek...) would be expensive to others so it is all in the eye of the beholder.
