Heading down to the school in Old Washington this fall for a damascus class and the fall hammer-in.
Any of you guys take this class? Any tips or advice?
Its been six years since my intro to bladesmithing class and I am really looking foward to being back down there.(boy, time sure flys!)

Those of us going back to school after just a two month break aren't quite as excited as you are about it. :D Sounds like a cool class though, I just signed up for my first forging class this semester and I'm really looking forward to it.

Have fun Mace. Tips. Eat dinner with the instructor, I learned as much talking around the table as I did in class.:D:D:D

I'm jealous Mace. I had a ball at my intro class and would love to do the damascus class sometime. Have fun!

Unless things have changed, you will be working in pairs making Damascus, so look for someone you want to be partnered with before they pick one for you.

Making Damascus usually calls for large quantities of Hot Flux flying around, so wear protective clothing. I find long sleeve Denim shirts work well. They are only good for one hit per spot, but they don't melt like synthetic materials, which you have to cut off your body.

Take a piece of soap stone (just in case they don't have any) to mark the number of folds you make on each billet, it is easy to loose track.

Most important, make sure to compensate for the macaroni. LOL

Hey Mace whats going on? It was good to see you at the Blade show. My class just had two people and the instructor so we were real well off. Jim Walker was my instructor and we had a great week. As Jim said, protective clothing is a real good idea as well as the long cuff welders gloves. The power hammers definitely sqirt molten flux, dont ask how I know. Whichever instructor you have Chris or Steve, you will learn a lot. I look forward to seeing you at the hammer in.
