Hey guys, im going backpacking with my bro for 3 weeks in australia and im considering what I should bring. Weight is an issue but if you guys have any links to a checklist or feel like writing your own that would be awsome.

So far on my list I got:1st aid kit
sewing kit
knife (going to bring my two folders-nothing special)
shaver
sleeping bag
flashlight (sm fenix with extra batteries)
rain protection
tent (with small tarp if i got room)
sunscreen
water bottles
aspiren (in the first aid kit)
clothing
footware
So thats my lsit so far..any other suggestions would be awsome-thanks in advance

Im probably going to bring that chemical water treating stuff rather than the filter. As for a hat, im not a hat guy haha

What type of food are you taking? 3 weeks worth is going to take up a lot of room. Stove? Fuel? cookware and dishes?

Because of a long lasting drought in some parts of Australia, water is going to be your primary concern, but I don't see a container to carry it, listed. I would suggest at the very least that you have a couple of 1 gallon collapsible plastic containers, along with your canteen/bottle.

The only chemical that I would recommend to you for water purification, is the only chemical that will actually purify the water and that is Micropur MP-1 tablets. 30 to a card will treat 30 quart/liters of water, so you better take two, or three cards to be on the safe side. Because if it's hot, you will be drinking a lot of water to remain hydrated and you're going to want a hat for protection from the sun, as well as to keep insects from falling on your head.

Will you have need for a fire? If so, firestarter and tinder can come in small packages, like the Spark-lite firestarting kit. Also, if there is need to make small pieces of wood, out of larger pieces, you will need some sort of edged tool that is up to the challenge.

Do you have a personal survival kit (PSK) to take with you?

If you're going really far away from civilization, a satellite phone might be a good idea...and two large ZipLoc bags to keep it dry until you need to use it.

If you're going to be out for a week or two at a time, food's going to be heavy. You might look to shave some ounces elsewhere. I would suggest...
-lose one of the folders (or both  )
-lose the shaver
-don't bring an extra tarp with the tent

But things you might enjoy having...
-trekking pole (or poles)
-a silk bag liner or simple cotton sheet (parts of Australia can be HOT)
-a stove and pot (will cut down on food weight in the long term)
-gaiters

Have you been Backpacking before? if not 3 weeks is a long time. I have done a couple of 1week trips and they can be difficult to plan and execute.

Weight is going to be pretty severe if your carrying 3 weeks of grub with you. I would cut down on weight in other areas.

Clothing, only bare minumum "Recyling is your friend"

Quality water filter, if your going to use chemicals use them before you go to make sure your body agrees with them.

Dump the sewing kit and other items you will not need. I read once that everything in your Backpack should be used daily, if it is not, then it should be left at home. The only exception being your first-Aid kit

What I always pack on my trips
Map + compass
1 pocket knife (Usually a SAK or Spyderco)
trash bag
watch
hat
watrproof matches
550 para cord (for hanging a bear bag)
headlamp (Petzl LED)
Tent (Marmot, no stakes or ground sheet to cut down on weight)
Sleeping bag (Marmot)
Sleeping pad (I leave it behind occasionally)
Quality boots + 3 pairs of socks
Rain Jacket + Pants
Stove (MSR pocket rocket+fuel cannister)
Food (freeze dried,instant soups,bagels,oatmeal etc)
Snowpeak titanium kettle to cook in (All of the meals I cook can be cooked in this one pan)
Lexan bowl and spoon (I leave the knife, fork and plate behind)
Disposable camera
Toothbrush w/short handle, bottle of Camp Suds soap and a scotchbrite pad
