OK, My bro-in-law gave me this beast of a knife and now I must learn what to do w/it. I've had "decent" pocket knives for years, but never really did much except for make some pointy sticks.

Now I have this monster blade with tons of capabilities, what are some common tasks that I should try?

Is there a beginners guide to BK2 ownership w/some skills to master?

I should mention that this is a family car/campground trip. Big tent, Ford Flex loaded to the max to include a roof rack/box.

You should baton a giant pile of wood to make a fire. Take pictures. Post them here. Also, take down some tree branches...or saplings. That's a good start. Then put pictures here.

well there aint much you can do in an area like what you describe. My wife likes to camp in these areas too. The ones with cut grass and bathrooms/showers are not a good place to be running around with a beast blade. You wanna keep the blade "low profile." I'd say what NikkiR said, Baton some wood for the fire. make some feather sticks maybe, or do what you've always done...make pointy sticks, LOL. Can't go wrong there.

The better question is "What shouldnt you do with it?"---The answer......nothing (except cut yourself or someone else....oh and dont throw it:D)----Make sure its nice and sharp before you go and heres a few ideas.
1. Take a section of a log and process it down using just the BK2 into all the stages of fuel for your fire (tinder shavings/feathersticks, kindling, wrist sized,etc..)
2. carve some marshmallow/hot dog roasting sticks
3. use just the bk2 to prepare your meals (chopping onions, slicing meat, etc...)
4. find a nice hiking staff/stick to whittle on
5. carve a chicken stick (see photo below, email me for link to instructions---not my photo below)

Or, for kicks and giggles.....take some large boned peice of meat and whack the hell out of it.....sounds fun to me. And you can call that food prep.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I specified campsite camping since I'm sure wilderness/backpacking would offer up a lot more opportunities to use the knife. I would ultimately like a "checklist" of skills I should have w/this knife so that should I be stranded somewhere (and just by chance have my knife) I would know what to do w/it.

You really can't beat a good chicken stick. It's kind of a "must do" when camping.

I'll do a search for chicken stick when I get home. the kids will get a kick out of that!

!. Carve out a life size lawn gnome.
2. Rambo style attack and kill a wild boar. ( tie knife to long straight sapling or branch, make spear )
3. Paul Bunyan a few trees

Seriously , you could blaze a trail when hiking so you don't get lost.
Food Prep
Cut your own tent stakes
Build a shelter / lean 2
Shave some tender for your fire
Maybe just some basic whittling

Honestly, just enjoy it. Whatever knife related tasks that need to get done take out the BK-2 and have at it.

Spend time having fun and the knife will get used when called upon.

One thing not to do with it is go swimming with it on your hip, that much 1095cv will sink you real quick haha. Enjoy your trip and the bk2!

I am going camping with a knife, and can't figure out what to do with the sharp pointy thing....

Stand there, look around, think... wait for it, wait for it, wait for it........

The wife would love the gnome!

Open a beer with it.
Bang it on a hollow log to make a briefly entertaining noise.
Throw it at logs.
Twirl it in your hand while chewing on a Sweetgum twig.
Turn sticks into extremely useful sharp sticks.
Sharpen it by flickering fire light while grumbling about the modern age.

Just chill in the woods for a bit. The knife itself will guide you. ;)

So profound, so ZEN! Me likey. My knife tends to call me to food in the woods. Yummy, bad for me, food.

If you are looking to accomplish some sort of set checklist or bucket list of what to do with a BK2... well... That would be a pretty long list...

If you want my honest opinion, this is what I do with new blades... They follow me everywhere and anytime I need to use a blade I use that new blade. This helps me learn about the blade, its strengths and my weaknesses etc etc. Basically it wont leave my side until I feel everything is good. This was particularly complicated with the BK9... Luckily my work at the time did not care and know how I am with knives.

Just let the BK2 become a good friend and use it when you need to use a blade... put away your pocket knives or whatever else you use to cut things with and either struggle or succeed for awhile... Its a good learning experience.

Good luck.
