Going Clipless!!!

Yesterday, while playing with my Spyderco Mini-Manix, I was trying to decide which I liked better: tip-up or tip-down.

Now the Mini-Manix already felt great in my grip, but while the clip was off I realized that it felt EVEN BETTER in my hand!
Perfect in fact!

So for awhile I'm going to go clipless and see how I like it.
It should not be a problem because I carried a Buck 110 in a pouch for years.
And luckily the M-M fits rather nicely in a Gerber multi-tool pouch that I have.

Who else prefers going clipless?

I go clipless with my SE Dodo and now the grip is arguably the best of any knife I own except for a custom. It's so great to just carry it real desreetly in the watch pocket!

I'm considering going clipless with my Spydie Spin, but I'm only carrying it right now, so coin pocket my be a pain... it seems like the blade isn't as centered without the clip, too..?

I go clipless with every knife I own. I was actually thinking about making a thread based on my experiences with this. That is many folders come with loctite on the clip screws and I've gone through two torx heads so far because they strip them. I had to spend about 20 minutes with some pliers today to get the clip off my new Boker Wharcom.

I think the clip makes it comfortable to carry the knife, but I don't like how it feels when you use the knife, when you reach into the pocket or the fact that it shows everyone you have a knife. My knife is never seen unless it's being used or I'm with like-minded friends and we're just showing eachother our latest knives. To me knives are so, so much more ergonomic without the clip. Maybe someday I'll find a clip that's comfy enough to leave on (Spyderco's Wire Clip comes close), but for now I think knives feel too much better in hand without one to consider it.

I've carried everything from a Kershaw Chive to a full size Manix in my pockets without a clips and it hasn't presented too many problems. For larger folders like an Endura or Opinel #10 I'll often put them vertical next to my wallet. Certain folders stay put there better than others. Most of them just go in my right front pocket, like my Storm, Leek, Wharcom and thin SAKs. Some I'll put in my wallet like my Buck Hartsook and Alox Bantam. With tighter pants something the size of an Endura will do a good job staying vertical in my front pocket unless I'm really running around, so it's still pretty comfortable.

Every knife I've owned felt too good without a clip for me to go back. The first thing I do when I get a new knife is reprofile the edge and take off the clip, won't even carry it any other way.

I think people should definitely try it with smaller folders like the Spyderco Delica and anything smaller they make, the Subcom series, Minigrips, Leeks and other smaller folders. Even laying horizontal in my front pocket the Leek doesn't bother me and it's big enough to get a four finger grip. The subcoms are smaller than many keyless entry systems on peoples keychains and they're very flat, not much of a reason to not try pocket carry IMO. The Byrd Robin would work great too.

I think the folks over in "Traditional" might prefer to go with that newfangled clipless carry method!:D

I've found stockmans to be among the most comfortable front pocket knives.

I just started carrying Bob Dozier's smallest folding hunter in my pocket. It didn't have a clip. It feels just fine and reminds me of the good ol' days. With an Emerson SOCFK clipped on the pocket above it, they make a fine pair!

So far I like carrying the Mini-Manix in the pouch.
It's almost as easy to access as when clipped in the pocket, and it does not feel too heavy riding on the belt.

I can't stand carrying a knife loose in my pocket...one of my problems with traditional knives like the stockman.
Heck, I even carry my Swiss Army knife in a small belt pouch.

The best part of having to back to formal dress is that most suits I now own have the additional pouch sewn into the pocket, so no rattling in the pocket.

Unless I'm carrying IWB I prefer to carry clipless. I don't need people constantly asking "What is that clipped to your pocket?" and then freaking out when they find out that it is a pocket knife.

Most bulky things I like to keep out of my pockets, like if I have a phone with me it's never in a pocket, I just carry it to the car and drop it in a console and leave it there. But smaller knives like I mentioned aren't too bad IMO. Can't even feel certain knives in my pocket, like the Wharcom and Buck Hartsook. But I guess it's kind of like ergonomics, that one way will fit me real well while it might bother the heck out of someone else.

The BM Presidio and the Spyderco Paramilitary feels absolutely great in the hand without a clip.

But I don't like my knives to go free in the pocket, nor carry a belt sheath. So the clip stays in :(

Maybe a pocket sheath will work, any one knows if I can buy one?

Sorry for my english :o

I am a hardcore clip guy, lol, but over the years I have grown to appreciate and love all kinds of knives which include many classy slipjoints...So I am trying this out myself soon...

I am a clip person myself. And my Atwood is the only knife that is clipless.

I guess that I am from the "other" school as I have clips on all my knives that came so equiped. Now, I do not clip any of my knives to my pockets or belt, I have a rather large hand and find that especially with my Mini-Grips and Leeks I need the clips in order to fill up my palm and allow me to better operate the thumb studs. Anyone else in this school?

Haaa funny. I go "clipless" all the time. My EDC's consist of a SAK Farmer, Case CV sodbuster, and new to inventory a Case Saddlehorn. Every once in a while I get crazy with a Opinel #7 however;) :D

I usually have one of both in either front pocket. I almost always go for the knife clipped to my pocket, as it is just much faster and more convenient. Usually the clipless is a knife with nostalgic value, but I do use them all!

I won't go so far as to remove the clip from a knife but I'll occasionally drop it deep in my pocket without using the clip. I never felt that a clip interfered with my grip on any knife.
