Going fishing/camping

Excellent advice so far. I've raised 4 kids(baby is 19 now). First big thing you have to expect is the DARK! They will be afraid of it. Make sure each has their own light and extra batteries(Mom too!)

Thats another great idea. I am the only one thats going to have a Surefire thats for sure.:D

When my kids were the age of yours I used to take duct tape and make a reverse[sticky side out] bracelet for them to wear on our walks. They would pick up anything they liked[flowers, rocks, leaves, etc] and stick them to their nature bracelets and then take them home to show mom or sometimes stick them on the fridge door. My kids are in college now and still remember that. Enjoy them while they're that age. It goes quick.--KV

teach them how to find their way w/o a compass. perhaps one of the most useful of tools for someone lost and knows they are near civilization and what direction it should be in.

like most would agree... just keep it fun so they don't get turned off by the great outdoors.
