Going For Cheap But Good!

My favorite cheap knives are:
Kershaw Tremor
Kershaw RJI
Ontario RAT Model 1
Spyderco Tenacious
Spyderco Resilience
Byrd Cara Cara 2

•Anything from the Spyderco Byrd line is good.
•Any Opinel is great, preferably the stainless ones, as their stainless holds a better edge than their carbon steel.
•The Cold Steel True Flight Thrower is actually a great utility knife, as its 1055 steel is amazingly tough, takes a great edge, and probably has better edge retention than your kitchen knives. The Cold Steel Bushman is a great, inexpensive, unique fixed blade with a good balance between edge retention and toughness. The new Cold Steel Voyager lne with Tri-Ad locks is in a class all its own. The Cold Steel Kudu is worth owning for may reasons, and is very easy on the wallet.
•Becker BK14.
•Any Mora fixed blade, preferably stainless, for the same reason as with the Opinels.
•Svord Peasant.
•Any Condor knife or machete in your price range.
•Any Sanrenmu or Enlan knife you like the looks and/or features of.
•Kershaw Needs Work. You can get a colored blemished one of these for less than $25 shipped from our very pown Kershawguy.

And my most evil suggestion of all: Make your own knife. You can get the bare(really bare) essentials to make a fixed blade knife for less than $40 with a trip to a local salvage yard and a Harbor Freight store. Check out the FAQs in the Bladesmith Questions and Answers forum for more info on how to do this.

I'm surprised that you find moras 1095 and opinels 1070 to have inferior edge retention to their 12c27, is this through personal exp? Because I've yet to see this happen

The Tenacious is a great knife at that price point. I also really like the Monochrome. I had one lost (I had some help "losing" it by some people who knocked over the coat rack so my knife fell out of my pocket while I was in a doctors appointment, left it by the door and ignored it, and someone stole it), and I bought a new one to replace it. Love that knife, although it doesn't get much pocket time.

If you get that Meyerco Maxx-q, let me know how you like it. I have the HTM real deal, and love it.

Great knife for your price point is a

Kershaw Cyclone (model 1630) It's discontinued, but still available. Just look around a little.

If you could mange another $20 ...

Buck Vantage Pro is one of the best for the money.

JMHO's - good luck

It may just be the way I use them. I use small knives like that as though they were razor blades with handles(i.e. mostly to cut fairly soft materials,) so a razor blade steel may just work better for me/hold a finer edge better. YMMV. In general and going beyond just Opinels and Moras, yes, I have had better results with the Sandvik steels than with simple carbon steels in the 1070 range.

This post is awesome exacly in my price range! thanks they should make a bigger list and make a sticky this could really help people

I Agree, I Think I'm Going With Either Of These Choices, As My Amount Of Money Has Decreased A Little:
Meyerco Catch Dog
Spyderco Ambitious
Spyderco Persistence - Maybe
Kershaw Tremor
Kershaw Compound
Kershaw RJ1 - If The Shipping Is Low Enough.
Benchmade H&K Monochrome
