Well....

Short version....
I'm going to give edcing my Umnumzaan for a year a shot. Looking for people to join me and or wish me luck! Also stories of your long term edc and how long you have carried for inspiration.

Long version....
I flip flop and rotate knives obsessively.. from slip joints to pocket fixed blades to swiss army to U.S. made only.....

I just received my new Umnumzaan on the same day I got my journeyman electrician exam results.. 94%! So I passed. Now that I can officially have apprentices work for me I think that umnumzaan means mister or boss is ironic. Also the Umnumzaan has a date of manufacture one day different than the day I was married (well the year is different but the month and day are the same)

Plus.... I want the satisfaction of having the same knife day after day. Someday I would like to look back and feel I really got my moneys worth for once. If I carry it for long enough it will only cost pennies a day!

I'm going to attempt retiring from the search for the perfect knife. I'm trying to switch philosophies to appreciating the things I already have. Which is one amazingly designed and built knife! It's not like I will be suffering! :D

While I am not sure I have the discipline to carry just one knife for a year I do think that if I only had the umnumzaan I would be fine. I carry mine often and it performs well under all the circumstance that I have encountered. I think it is a great knife

Good Luck

I usually rotate between 2 to three and sometimes four. It's a 1 2 or 3 blade thing. I'll give it a shot with my MM 5300. No garuntees from me:thumbup: go for it.

What is this umnunzaan that you speak of ?

Dude, do it and never look back. It will be a rush!

LOL X2:cool:

Shane,

Most excellent choice. The time will fly by, for sure. Looking forward to hearing your review in a year!

Best regards to you and your family!

Dave

P.S. Oh yes, long term EDC story -- I think you know mine. 16 years carrying a large regular Sebenza 95% of the time (large Classic, small Classic, Mnandi, and Umnumzaan make up the 5% balance). Started with an ATS-34 blade, then switched to S30V in the 13th year. Don't see this changing any time soon.

Good luck. I know I could never do that. Just too many fine knives and too few days.

Quote ; (I'm trying to switch philosophies to appreciating the things I already have). This is exactly where i am,too.what good is buying more & more ? and after 20 or 30 years, enough is enough.there has to be a time to stop & enjoy what you already have.unless its something real unique or different,im pretty much satisfied with what ive got. at least your choice for a "monk" knife is a great one. good luck !

First off, Congratulations on turning out...just remember it's not just about giving orders ...it should also be your job to train the apprentice working with you so that one day he will become a well rounded journeyman.

The Zaan tripped my trigger when it first came out and has been my primary edc ever since...for me it also made me feel that it's the one knife i need (folder)....the knife game is very expensive and addicting...although i still have quite a few....they just sit in closets and on shelves collecting dust...doesn't do much for me these days.

Aside from my family my Harley's are my life...I met a guy that has a Harley that just sits in his garage...he rides it around the block about once a year...he just likes to say " I own a Harley "....what good is having something you never use.

If i could only have one folder ,it would be the Zaan...it works for me.

Good luck with your year...it shouldnt be a problem.

Thanks for the stories, and well wishing everyone.

I will have a victorinox classic on the keys. Just too handy of a little bugger!

I think "I am a person" is right. It's not cheating to carry along a supplemental knife is it? I like to have a victorinox farmer, or compact or one with a wine opener along if going to a party :D

I'll join you :D

I'll give it a go with one of my SuperTinkers  Tried to carry a main EDC blade for a year and failed at about three months. I think picking a backup knife like the SuperTinker will yield better results in my case :D

The Yum-Yum is a fine choice

Good luck :)

I have had the Umnumzaan in my pocket from the day I walked out the shop.
I often carry knives along with it but the Umnum is a tricky one to put down :p

I'll try to EDC my Korth Stinger. I love this thing even though it's smaller than what I normally carry. It might be tough if I get an orange Millie for X-Mas... Just used it to cut the leather on my strop for straight razors and normal knives. 1 micron diamond paste, and chromium oxide.

Shane,
I too will join you, but with a different knife--my 3.5" XM-18 flipper. I would do my Um, but I expect that it will be going out for some custom work sometime within the next few months, and therefore I'd be without for at least a few weeks. I have some very nice folders I usually rotate through, but I will do my best to keep it to the XM-18.

BTW, should we also forego small fixed blades, or is this more of a "one folder" only concept?

Arrrrrggggh!!!! I made it like two days and caved!

The Umnumzaan is awesome. Gives the real feeling of a fixed blade when open. Just got a damned craving to carry something smaller, slimmer and lighter.

I'm a knife slut.

Only 2 days?!?!?! :barf:

Maybe you need to send it my way and I'll see if I can do better. ;):p

I truly love my Umnumzaan. However, it is not a knife for all occasions.

Try again, but with a backup knife... Something that can fit in your watchpocket!

Owe, I don't know... Maybe a Case CV Med stockman! :D Or maybe a SAK of your choice?
