Going Gear fire steels

I just chuck a wine cork, oak or synthetic; into a vise and drill a hole a bit smaller than the firesteel. I then twist the steel into the cork, and now it has a handle. Free cheap, and oh, when your steel starts to wear down you can easily flip it around in the field and have a fresh end to start! Smaller sizes actually float too!

Not bad ... not bad at all. There must be a number of things that would work as firesteel handles that I haven't even imagined. Thanks, 1Tracker!

Here to share the knowledge, you are more than welcome! The synthetic corks are more common these days, due to the price of natural cork going up in price. Also, the prevalence of 'screw top' wine bottles will have you paying for more than some Boone's Hill to get a cork.....unless you have wine drinker aquaintences who save the corks for you!

I'll have to search around. I'm afraid that most of my friends think Boone's is gourmet wine, and can't understand why anyone would put a cork in a bottle now that screw tops have been invented. Surely I must know someone who drinks decent wine.

Edit to add: Ah-ha! I just remembered that a friend of mine left a wine bottle here once when she was over. It's only got about an inch of wine in it, but the cork's still good. I'll give it a try.

Or just head down to a local resturant that sells wine by the glass or bottle, and ask the waiter/tress if they could find a few corks for your 'new kitten to play with', ahem.... You are eating out anyway, so ask the waitstaff! Most decent Italian resturants have loads of corks daily they just toss out. The ones' I go to regularly have a bag full waiting on me when I stop in for a meal. A doggie bag of corks!

Now that's another good idea. I used to tend bar a thousand years ago, and we had lots of corks that we tossed. I'll check it out.

Thanks again, 1Tracker!
