Hey guys i'm going to be getting a gold membership very shortly. It's time I sell some of my knives that have never seen the light of day and acquire some new ones :D

Im wondering if someone can give me an idea of how the process goes with selling knives in the exchange. Ive never sold anything online before in my life so I am a little lost. How are payments sent/received? What is the best way to ship? I live in Canada and am most likely going to use the Canadian Exchange to simplify things.

I think half the fun with this hobby is the seemingly never-ending cycle of hunting->finding->buying->fondling->(trading/selling/gifting/keeping). Im looking forward to this being simplified by this awesome community.

No problem mang. If I can help, let me know. Thank you for supporting the site, the community appreciates it. ;)

Paypal is the preferred way to sell on the exchange. It's fast, works across borders, and provides some protection for both parties. It does, however, charge a percentage, and some people have been dissatisfied with their experiences with Paypal. The other popular option is money order, but I don't know if that works in Canada. Also, a lot of buyers avoid sellers who only use money order because it offers no buyer protection.

You're making the right choice! I went gold several years ago and never looked back!
A couple of things that I always do:
Always ship priority.
Always get delivery confirmation!
Always get insurance!
Be Honest!
Don't accept anything less from any one else

This is a really great community. We are all very lucky to be a part of it.
If you have any questions feel free to PM or email me and ask. My email address is CPierce206@gmail.com

Thanks for the tips Tsu. Any canucks here have experience buying and selling with fellow forumites from over the border? Ive heard that they like to seize 'flick' knives coming into canada...

I'm going to move this to FEEDBACK rather than Tech Support. We have a lot of threads in FEEDBACK on how to buy, how to ship -- check out the stickies at the top of the forums list at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/699-FEEDBACK-The-Good-The-Bad-The-Ugly!

The Postal Inspectors can help if you are defrauded by USPS Money Order. PayPal is very good: follow common sense and their rules.

I highlighted this very good advice.

Fixed blades will clear Canadian Customs without a problem. Folders are an ongoing problem, almost depending on the individual inspector. But all of them will seize a knife that can be flicked open, even if they have to flick exceptionally hard. If the seller tightens the pivot, that might help, but I wouldn't guarantee it.

Not quite true Esav. No knuckle guards that are full/knuckle dusters, no push daggers allowed for FB's.

I've sent and received from the states, no real problems. Tightening pivots is a must, but be prepared for possible seizure with folders. I've not had it happen but I worry a but with every order. Hey, even if one goes missing I'm not too worried- I have more knives, and if I can't afford one knife lost then my priorities are off. Not saying I plan on loosing one, just that I accept the chance. I don't worry at all about interCanadian shipments.

It's a great community, and I will watch the exchange for your offerings.

Ya there is always a risk associated no doubt. At the top of my list this year is the exclusive Spyderco PM2, CTS-XHP, orange G10. I have to have this knife! :D What worries me about trying to buy a knife like that from the States though, is that the Reeves style pivot can't tightened to the point that the blade cant be 'wrist flicked' out. Hopefully I find a Canadian willing to part with one..

I just paid for the Gold so we'll see how long it takes to activate.

I recently made the leap and a few things I learned:
  • It is okay to have people contact you via email or PM, but make it the first "I'll take it" in the thread will make it easier for you to sort it out. It will blow your mind how fast people will start jumping on your knives.
  • I went to the local UPS Store and had them package and ship them. This is not necessary, you can ship them via paypal and it's much easier.
  • I cannot help with the Canadian/international part of it.
  • Taking paypal is the quickest way to expedite the process. But there is some risk. Personally I think you should not ask for PP gift, you should ask for regular PP and you should include shipping and fees in your price.
  • Post pictures and any concerns about nics or scratches. Be completely honest and up-front. I think most anything will sell on the forums, just be up-front about it.

Thanks five and Esav and everyone else who's been helping me out.

How do you know when the gold membership is activated. I bought it on my mastercard form the BF store a couple hours ago.

I think I've figured this one out, [rules violation]

Hmmm??? Dumb idea, or sly like a fox?

Yep, dumb idea to be posting it here.

Give me a shout if you have specific questions, and I'll do my best to share what I know - I'm just on the other side of the river :)

Thanks Default Ill keep that in mind when the time comes.

Elkins I really have no idea what you are talking about. I am new here and have read the rules so please enlighten me if you will. When someone breaks the rules it would be very helpful if you (the community) would simply let them know what they did wrong :) I was just trying to give the most pertinent example to my situation that I could. I am truly concerned about buying and selling over the border that's all.

The member that violated the rules was notified (by me) regarding the issue with their post. The "warning" issued is not an indictment of the member nor his character.

Simply stated, these boards cannot and will not be used to provide any information that contravenes the laws of any municipality, state, or country (so don't expect to see the offending information re-posted here).

Thanks Blues that's no problem. When I read what Elkins had written with my post quoted above it, it read like I had broken the rules and Elkins was the one warning me. Now I realize im just a confused noob ;)

Cheers
