Going into the bush alone.

I prefer solo or with my wife and kid. My wife understands my love for knives and enjoying what mother nature has to offer and she is the same. So I never have to worry about her getting anxious to move on.

As far as what I carry when someone is with me, aside from my wife because she carries her own, is water. IMO people don't carrly nearly enough water. I end up carrying more to give away.

Most of the time, when I am afield, I am alone. I prefer it that way.

Being alone or with others, does not alter what I take with me, or how I prepare.

I grew in a fairly remote area, so up until my mid-20s did all my hiking solo. I brought very little gear, water, etc. If I needed water I'd drink out of a creek or spring. If I cut myself I'd cut off a piece of my shirt and bandage it up. I generally hiked in steel toed work boots, ripped up jeans, and a wife-beater. I was in excellent shape and knew the terrain like the back of my hand.

Twenty years later I rarely go out alone. I'm more cautious, bring more water, food, and medical supplies. Fortunately, the people I go out with appreciate peace and solitude as much as I do, so we rarely get in each others way. The only things I change now, depending on whether I'm solo or with others, is the amount of food and water I bring. I usually bring a little extra in case someone else didn't bring quite enough.

about 50/50 for me.
I do let peopleknow where I'm gonna be and I have a very clear time set for the end of the day/trip phone call saying I'm OK.

I ususally include a map with the area highlighted where I'm gonna be with my wife also.

2 years ago, my "I,m OK" call time after a 3 day solo trip was at 8pm and I called my wife at 7:55. SHe was a bit nervous on that one!

Hiwa, i spent 95% of my time alone in the woods. My entire childhood i spent alone i the woods, doing my own thing, marching to my own drum. I get along with few people, the exceptions have been the BC Wrecking Crew in the last few years. Of course, i have mellowed with age, that may be a factor.

+1

I also was born and raised with knowing how and being alone in the Woods.

It's always the wife and myself and once in a while my best friend will join us.

Other than my wife and best friend I don't know anyone that wants to venture out into the woods and mountains like we do, they think that we are nuts and have something wrong with us. if they only knew!

I'll let them have the malls, clubs and bars and keep the trails and mountains to ourselves.
