Going long for moose

Well I was lucky enough to get drawn for bull moose this year. My season runs Sept 10-24. Yesterday morning we spotted a moose in a cut block. Through the bino's I thought it was a bull, and a quick look through the spotting scope revealed that he was. As I nesled in behind the 280 Ackely that was resting over my pack my friend said "440 yards". I held accordingly and took the full frontal shot. As the rifle recovered from the recoil I saw a flash of the moose as he fell into the vegetation. The 140TSX hit right where the neck meets the spine.

The little Honda proved it had a big heart packing out the meat in one load:

Happy hunting all!

I'm not sure what the rating is for the back rack...but I'm sure we exceeded that too:o

Grats on the moose. Last time I actually saw one was when someone was driving home from Canada to southern Ohio. Saw it a rest stop on my way to North Carolina last year.

Well done sir!
That is one of my dreams. Moose steak is by far my favorite.

Congratulations. Lot of good eating there.

If your first time eating moose, be aware that it will may come out antlers first the next morning...our fish camp had moose burgers, beer battered walleye fried in butter and Seagrams Crown Royal for supper one evening..something gave us gas..probably the liquor.

Very nice "eating moose" vs a gamy ol'bastid with a big trophy rack Bruce.

Two years ago someone I do work for shot a moose that is #158 on the boone and crockett and even the sausage was a little tough and gamy.

How long do you hang yours or is it straight to freezer?

Yup - I like eating the young tender ones! We got him skinned, quartered, game bagged and haning in my wood shed. It dropped to 1C last night which was good. Both local butcher shops closed here and the closest one is 2hr drive away. I think we will grind the front quarters one night this week and cut the hinds next weekend (5-7 days hanging time). We have butchered our own deer, sheep, antelope, mt goats, and calf moose - but this will be the first time for a big moose.

You should move up here and open a buther shop Brad, then we'd have a place to take our moose:p

Congrats Bruce. Moose is about the only thing I like a little better than Elk.

Hey Bruce, Congrats Bro!!! Looks like the projectile stayed in tack real well. Man I bet the 4-wheel was crying:D, good times guy...

Congrats on the moose! I saw quite a few on a bear hunt up in Maine a couple of weeks ago. Would love to hunt one someday. Nice shot!

Well we just finished grinding the front quarters (yeild 100 lbs of moose burger). Used a 1hp Cabela's grinder which worked great. Going to tackle the hinds tomorrow.

very cool brother. moose is some of the best meat from wild game there is. yummm making me hungry with those pics :)

Congrats on the kill, nice shot. Great weight retention on that bullet. How much did that moose weigh?

Love the knife! Very simple, very functional pattern. How did the edge hold up? I'd like to see some specifics on in when you get a chance.
