Going on a Cruise...No Knives Onboard...

I had the same issue when I took a 10 day cruise a couple years ago; no knives on board. I always carry a knife. So I put a 4" fixed blade in the luggage, and a traditional folder in the shaving kit, and they made it to my room OK. The one in my pocket got caught when we boarded, but I got it back at the end of the trip. (PIA). Still, while everyone else joined the throngs looking for typical tourist junk every time we docked, I spent my time looking for the hunting/fishing shops and buying a knife. I found this got me away from most of the crowds, and I spent my time talking about stuff I like to do with like-minded locals. Even got a couple invites to go back and visit and do some backcountry stuff.

Stuff I learned: Watch what you eat. Use the gym.Late at night and early in the morning are good times to be on board (98% of the passengers will be asleep). Don't use the internet unless you're in port. And find a quiet place with a pretty waitress to bring you coffee and a pastry, tip her well, and be a regular for the cruise; it can pay off. Oh yeah, the company that owns the boat figures you're a captive audience; they will try to sell you anything and everything, don't buy anything on board except drinks, and I'd take my own booze.

Have a good trip.

I've never been on a cruise and don't foresee going on one, I am very intelligent and flexible and the reason I am armed with a minimum of 2 knives and 1 pistol everyday is because everyday situations could become survival situations in only seconds, being prepared increases your chances of survivability. Happens everyday in our world, I won't be the one who is unprepared when it's back to the primitive, the fight is on, if you can't make provision or protect what little you or your family may have, others who are armed will take from or worse. I wouldn't say armed preparation is a fobia, I would say its more of a choice in knowing when and how you will be able to stand and fight if that need arises.

Intelligent people are flexible and adaptive.
Fobiacs are not.

:)

Maybe you all are overdoing.
There are many places on earth you can't carry what you want.
Ever thought about that the places on this planet with most freedom, safety and high civilization standards also have the most rules and regulations?

;)

Why you need so desperate a multitool on a cruise anyway? To repair the ship? :p
Millions of people don't carry knives or multitools and they just survive the day. Really.
So if they can without for a certain time, you can.
Challenge yourself a bit more and come loose from your fixed habits.
Yes you can.

Carnival Cruises had their policy well posted most cruise lines didn't. I guess with the others you will have to email a request for carry on restrictions.

Carnival
• Knives with blades longer than four (4) inches ( Recreational dive knives are allowed but must be held in the custody of the Guest Services Manager or Chief Security Officer and must be checked out/in by the owner for dive excursions during the cruise.)

• Scissors with blades longer than four (4) inches (Large scissors of the type used by scrapbook and quilting enthusiasts are at times permitted with prior notification from the Security Services Department, but are held onboard in the same manner as dive knives.)

I've made one cruise from Seattle to Alaska and back. The rules said some thing about no knives but I left my Swiss Army in my shaving kit where it always is. I didn't try to go through their metal detectors with anything in my pockets. I wasn't trying to carry self-defense weaponry or other fantasy stuff, just a basic tool. Swiss Armies serve a thousand uses and anyone that tries to tell me there is no reason I need to carry one lives a way more pampered urban lifestyle than I do.

Which describes precisely what taking a cruise is all about! Short of one's personal hygiene, they do pretty much everything else for you. As shecky aptly pointed out a few posts back:

This is where knife nuttery morphs into the range of stupidity. Sometimes we lack a little bit of perspective.

An enforced no knife policy means they are treating me as if I am a crook, and they have complete disregard for myself (and my family and "our culture"). We could rent a cabin and have a great time somewhere nice for the same money. Policies like this sound a lot like some laws around the country.

There are many places to enjoy a vacation and spend our money. For example, look at places like San Francisco, where we used to take family & friends to enjoy the restaurants & sights on the Wharf & Pier 39, hotels, shows (Mosconi Center), the Zoo, Chinese New Year, Alcatraz, and so on. No longer. Now we go to places like the Gold Country, Tahoe, and our own local sights/ restaurants/ shows and so on. We enjoy ourselves and still haven't robbed or attacked anyone.

I can even buy more knives with all the money I save. :)

Even on cruise boats there are bottles to open, corks to pull and packages to cut into. From what I could tell, the main point of the cruise company was to sell a captive market "stuff" while out to sea. I never felt "pampered" by the crew at all. Probably will not be doing it again anytime soon.
