Going Stag - Deer 101 class.

I use both red deer (farm grown) and sambar (indian source) and find significant differences in surface texture, colour, and thickness.

Red deer tend to exhibit a pebbly surface texture while sambar has a more grooved surface with out the pebbles.

Red deer have a bright white colour in the outer shell while the Sambar is a little darker, more creamy).

The red deer that I use tends to be thinner than the sambar but that could be attributed to growing season and temperature. I not really sure.

I heard that Red deer is best for scales as the the antler is more pithy as opposed to the Sambar stag's more solid antler.

Does anyone know how long stag will last?

Great Post! I found it interesting that Axis deer live so long. I don't think the deer (we only have Axis and a small pop. of Blacktail) here in the islands could run the gauntlet that long:eek: lol. But anythings possible.:D

KHL, Opposite is true, solid means no warping or cracking...So I was told....300
