Going to ABS Expo, Reno.....thoughts

One thing that didn't work was the "collector's corner". Basically, a back room was dedicated for collectors wanting to sell / trade their stuff. It was open for any to go, but there was no may to advertise it to the public in the main room. Basically, the only way it could have worked would have been for you to agree with another collector in advance.

For this to work I think maybe a window of 1hr or so (not much more) should be dedicated to the collector's corner, say around Noon on Sunday (i.e., 1hr after the makers can start their sales).

I totally agree Joss that the "collector's corner" was definitely a missed opportunity.
STeven and I did venture there with a couple collectors who had brought a few Moran's to possibly trade/sell which evolved into some very good conversation.
I have spoken to several folks on this matter and feel we will see some positive changes to the collectors corner in San Antonio.

I did get some photos, however not sure how well they will be, but will post them in a couple days. There were extremely nice pieces at the Show.

The Custom Knife Collector's Association (CKCA) project start-up and advisory teams had our first meeting on Saturday morning. Exciting stuff! Details to come.

All in All, a very productive trip even though I didn't pick up any knives.

Here are my quick notes from the show...

- The work of Tommy Gann is impeccable - maybe a tad more expensive than I expected? I regret that he use so much NiSilver. Had he used bronze, silver, copper, steel / iron, or stainless, I would have purchased something for sure. In any case, the quality is top notch and I placed an order with him.

That's it for now...

Joss,
I'm curious. What is it that makes you feel that Tommy's work is a "tad" to expensive?

Paul

Steven, That strategy of yours of camping out in front of the knife that you wanted (The only Dean Bowie, and the best at the show in my opinion.) was sure effective.
I got the Caffrey Mossiac Drop Point Hunter which is posted at his site: http://www.caffreyknives.net/Reno08Preview.html

Great feel and perfect balance.

Nice meeting you, man!!

Great score on the Caffrey!!......Previewed the Dean, and knew that I wanted it...NO PRESALE was in effect for the knives on the table...so camping out was the only viable approach....otherwise Joss would have snaked it.;)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Yep I would have. I was seriously considering offering you a cup of coffee laced with laxatives to force you to leave the table!

More seriously, congrats on a great purchase. You did exactly the right thing to get it.
