This is probably not the right forum for this, but since this is my home forum, I'm going to make my comments here anyway. There has been a rash of knife related crimes in Edmonton and our mayor has commented that he is considering trying to get a ban on the sale of at least some types of knives. I was contacted by CTV News as to whether I would like to comment on the mayors possible future plans.

Though I am not comfortable in front of TV cameras, I felt that it would be wrong not to present a different side to the argument. If bans like that take hold, it could be very bad for the knife industry as a whole in Edmonton, and if it takes hold here it could spread elsewhere. I have read that the Saskatchewan government is considering the same kind of actions.

There are quite a few knifemakers in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and these types of bans could be devastating to their businesses. There are definitely other very important consequences to these kinds of bans, not the least of which is the loss of freedoms they would entail and the slippery slope we would find ourselves on if they are enacted.

Hopefully calm heads will prevail and this will not go any farther, but I am going to be preparing myself for the possible future battle. This is not something I will take laying down.

well I wish you the best of luck and hope the story is presented from a non bias point of view (unless the bias is to keep knives :) ) Link up the story or try to record it for us!!

Good for your Keith - that's a courageous step. Be prepared for anything question-wise.

Roger

I bet ya do great, just ask them how they are going to cut their food with out knives?:)
This seems to be going on a lot these days?

Good luck and let us know the out come?

Todd

Tell them to focus on crime - not the methods used.
Next time there's a DUI fatality and the guy drove a Camaro, I think they should ban Chevrolet.
Give them that as an analogy.

I'm glad someone from the knife community has been provided an opportunity to represent our views.

The Canadian media has a tendency toward a left wing bias (CTV not quite as bad as CBC) so it is encouraging that they are making an effort to present both sides of the argument.

I will be watching with great interest. Do us proud:thumbup:

Kevin

Note: If you haven't already done so you should duplicate your post in the Canadian Connection.

I was very happy to see that the news program actively sought out someone to provide a differing view from that of the mayor. Most news programs would not have done that. They would have been content with just presenting one side of the issue.

Sadly, there are many legislators (local, state, and federal) who need to come up with something "New and Innovative" in order to make their "Mark". Often times, they get their ideas from the liberal media, then work very hard to get their compadres (who are often times looking to get noticed) on the bandwagon with them.

I have yet to have a Senator or Representative contact me on issues involving knife or gun laws, however, they have no problem soliciting votes on election year.

If you get the chance Keith, give them a good dose of common sense. They won't understand, but give 'em hell.

Robert

Anything and everything you can do to preserve knife and guns rights is awesome good luck and sock it to them brother:thumbup:

Good luck, and lets hope you enlighten a few people on this subject.
Its weird how the problem of people instantly thinking weapon when they see a knife is worldwide.
Its something I've noticed alot of late, and find really strange. Its like looking at a piece of 2 x 4 and straight away imagining bashing someone on the head with it! I guess these are the same type of folk who see the bad in everything, and then try to ban all manner of items they perceive to be "bad". At the same time, they bleat on about being liberal minded. The hypocracy shown by these "antis" makes me sick.
Sorry to ramble on, but this whole media driven anti guns, anti knives thing that is sweeping the world, especially the UK, makes a mockery of so-called democracy.
Time for a cigarette to calm myself down!
Before they ban that too:rolleyes:

The interview was very casual and the reporter did not seem to have an agenda. He quite enjoyed getting to see my collection and honestly appeared to think that the mayor was overreacting.

The interview is supposed to be on tonight's evening news.

Good on ya for standing up for the good guys.
Its a shame when legislation is passed that essentially punishes the law abiding.
The criminals are already unconcerned with breaking the law.

Way to go Keith, it will be interesting to see what effect your interview has on the outcome, hopefully you'll gain lots of backing from the locals when it aires and the mayor will gets lots of phone calls against his misled ideas.

Bill

I just got see the interview and it was edited to only a few lines. They did tell me that there was a good chance that they would be talking to me more in depth in the future if the mayor does decide to go through with his plans.

I am going to try to get in contact with the mayor's office to see if it is possible to meet with him to see if there is any common ground. I'm hoping he is a reasonable person and is open to listening to my concerns.

Thanks for speaking up, Keith. Where's the YouTube link? :p

Keith, THANKS from the whole knife crowd. I'm glad you got the chance to give them a reality slap.

Thanks for speaking up Keith. I wish you good fortune with the mayor too! If possible, try to share the video via You Tube as suggested, it would be very interesting to watch.
