Going to Cancun on vacation. What are the knife laws out there?

They are warning "spring breakers" - why aren't they warning families? It's because the college kids on spring break are allowed to go absolutely as wild as they want to - no nanny laws to protect them.

I've been to Cancun 14 times and my 15th is already booked. Of course there is crime as in almost every City on the planet. But I will tell you, I've been to NYC and seen some very disturbing things every time I've been there. In Cancun there is a very relaxed an welcoming vibe from the Mexicans. Never seen any crazy stuff go on. Ever.

Just one mans experience, but it is based on experience. The food at the better resorts and restaurants is world class today, the water is crystal and warm, the beaches are soft and white, and the people are just awesome. Just don't do anything stupid and you are good to go.

I've been to Cancun as well, no complaints personally, but this was back in the late 1990s.

Personally, I'll take the Florida Keys over any other tropical locale I have ever been to. And hey, you can carry almost any sensible knife there, not to mention guns!

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Have you stayed at the Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort? Doesn't look like a bad place to spend a week. Also, do you have any favorite restaurants or recommend certain activities? Appreciate the input.

We should check out the Florida Keys one of these days. I'm out in California and Maui is our usual destination, which knives seem to be ok, but I have to leave the guns at home. Anywhere else we travel in the states I bring a few knives and guns with spare mags:) This will be the first trip where I won't have anything.

I work for Starwood vacation ownership. The westin lagunamar is one of our properties. It's paradise, if you need a knife call the concierge and ask them for one, I just wouldn't leave the property with it

Nice, we've owned our ocean front at Kaanapali North in Maui for 8 years. This is the first time we're not using our home resort. Wife and I decided to change it up for our 10 year wedding anniversary. You have any recommendations on the other 19 resorts? I think we have 280,000 points banked for next year.

K OR north is paradise. Have you been to the Princeville one? It's more "away from civilization"

While the police may no longer protect the tourist business in Cancun by beating criminal that they catch and threatening to kill them if they ever set foot in the city again, it ain't Ciddad Juarez or even Acapulco by any stretch of the imagination. My understanding is that the "cartel activity" in QR was more the Zetas and others using it as a "vacation" spot, at least in the case of Isla Mujeres. It is not stated in an area that is suitable for current smuggling methods. The Gulf between Yucatan and Florida is probably the LAST place that you want to try to ross with a load today. The dominant smuggling trade in that part of the world over the last decade or more has been bring refugees from Cuba, many of whom then go to Canada and do the special "feet dry" thing into the US from there.

The Cancun area has the same fish as the Keys but the desirable offshore species like sailfish, blacken tuna and dolphin tend to be bigger and much more plentiful from late December to the end of June. The waters off Cancun are a huge spawning/feeding area much like the Sea of Cortez is at Cabo. Thats why we went there . Friendlier and a hell of a lot cheaper than the Bahamas.

We haven't been there yet. That's a place we are planning to check out too. Have you been to any of the Caribbean properties? Just wondering if it's worth the extra time and cost of airfare coming from California. Thanks!

Thanks, sounds very pretty and the waters look nice.. Have you done any fishing out there?

I have gone every year for many years to this area, mostly the Mayan Riviera. I love it there, I am sure you will too. I rent a car and drive and have never had nay problems at all. Not saying you couldn't run into trouble but trouble can be found anywhere.

I always take a Spyderco Dragonfly Salt H1 with a bright yellow handle I have taken a saver salt as well in the past and usually either a SAK or a Leatherman CS4 as well. When traveling by air I zip tie them through either the Lanyard hole, or the sypder hole if it is a Spyderco, to the zipper in my shaving Kit in my checked luggage. I do this anytime I travel anywhere because - "A" you can't carry them in your checked luggage and "B" I don't want security to steal them.

I think a Dragonfly is your best bet it is small and unthreatening but still an exceptional little knife, if customs did happen to seize it you are not out a lot of money, although I doubt they would. I have had my luggage stickered as opened by security and never had one removed and talked to other people that have had smaller knives in their luggage during a check and had no issues.

I prefer the Salt series obviously in that particular climate, even if you don't swim with it and brightly coloured knives I think (and this is only an opinion) look more like a tool and less threatening. I legitimately carry them for when I swim or snorkel. I use a lanyard with a stainless S-Biner attached so that I can clip it into a backpack or the pocket of my swim trunks, that way I also don't have to leave it at the beach to get stolen.

The other thing I wouldn't be without is a good water resistant flashlight. I use the Fenix PD22, really small, powerful and super handy to have a long for so many reasons and if you ever needed something for defense a blinding light is a much better option than a knife IMHO.

Hope that helps a little have a great trip.

When I went to Mexico a few years back I declared my huntsman on the customs form, the customs agent laughed, told me to fill out the form again. Second time through the line I got the red-light search, the officer at the search table was more interested in my soap dish (US army decontamination kit box) than in my knife.

Thanks that was very helpful. I will take a look at the Dragonfly.

For some reason this doesn't shock me:)

I'm no expert, but isn't Cancun supposed to be more about pussy than knives? :) :) :)

I've gotten to old to chase after the twenty something's. The nice thing is my wife has been hitting the gym and stepped it up since booking the trip. She wants to compete against the younger girls and in my opinion is doing a pretty good job at it;)

The Dragonfly H1 is a surprising little knife I think you would find it very useful and its nice not having to worry about the steel. When I am not using it for travel it is handy to have when skiing, cycling, backpacking etc. it is small, light weight and very capable.
