So I'm gonna be near a Kayne and Sons while I'm at the Smokey Mt. Hammer-In next week.

Gonna buy a hammer. What would be the first hammer you would get for blade forging? I already have a big cross peen... although it is of dubious quality.

Intuition tells me to get something with a smaller head for handling the detail work. But what about head shape? And how many folks use a straight peen?

Do you know how to get there? If you have a gps, I can post the coordinates to help you.....it was a bugger to find the first time.

no I don't. I heard it's 20 min from the hammer in. Sure! Post some coordinates. I will have my little trail/map gps....

Here ya go:

35 deg., 34' 22.78 N
82 deg., 40'47.47 W

Look it up on Google Earth if you want. It was way off the beaten path the first time I tried to find it. Typing in 100 Daniel Ridge Road, Candler, NC (Their mailing address) was not even close in my GPS for what its worth. The only thing that tipped me off to its location was spotting a plywood (?) blue anvil cutout on a post at the bottom of a gravel drive. After I got there, I edited my gps location with the actual coordinates while in their driveway.

You will enjoy the place and definitely plan on spending some time there. Old man Kayne is a hoot to talk to and he loves to give "tours" of the place. Make sure you ask to see their induction forge...like something out of Star Wars. Ask to see their little museum while there...that's cool as well...a sampling of their forgings over the years.

Drive safe and have a great time.
