Going to Peru/Amazon... what knife/knives?

Hi Orion. I lived in Peru for seventeen years and I've been to Machu Pichu and to the jungles in Loreto and Madre de Dios. My point is this, have you tried a STRIDER? that would be my first choice. they are bull strong, very well made. Since you mention that there will be guides, Mr.Randall's advice is sound. Maybe you would be well served with a mod. MT or an MH or an HT, the HT can be had with a smaller blade(3or4"). The other two models can be had in 6 or 8 in. STRIDER knives are made of ATS-34 with a propietary heat treat from Paul Bos. I have had a chance to play with many of them, and they are good to go! One last thing, I would avoid ALL rubber handles or handles that are smooth or slippery, if you get into a real jungle environment you WILL be wet.

Food prep : CRKT Stiff Kiss.
Really light weight and thin enough for peeling fruit but still good enough for cutting meat.

Utility: Sak and/or Multitool.
Everyone agrees here i would think

Belt Knife: If you need one might i suggest an ontario blade? That way if you decide to ditch the weight after huffing and puffing up the country side you won't whine that much about the cost. If you need it they will still do a pretty good job. C/S Bushmaster also fills the bill.

Cheap file to sharpen local machetes if you buy one. A hidden folder can't hurt either.

Traveling in wilderness I would choose a pair of Fällkniven blades: S1 as general utility knife and WM1 around the neck for gentle and precise tasks and as backup knife.
Having a decent medium sized axe in my equipment I would think about replacement S1 with F1 or SPYDERCO Bill Moran Featherweight.

I would strongly suggest to go with the CS Bushman. It is light, cheap, tough. Big enough to chop with, still small enough for food preparation. Can be used as a spear. Has a hollow grip to stuff things.
It is very similar to a lot of the cheap, hand forged knives the people in the south asian jungles use.
Combine this with a good multi-tool and you will have all you need for a very small price.

Well, first, I know that jungles are sometimes green and hot....

So, given my experience in them.....

But, the suggestion of the Bushman or mini-Bushman makes sense to me. And the suggestion about the file.

I'd recommend the SAK Huntsman or Rucksack and Fallkniven F1 in a sheath from Normark. Then look into a good, lightweight hiking staff and the stuff your girlfriend is encouraging. Sounds like she has a better grip on things than most of us here do...lol.

PS...Don't forget a sharpener!
