going to san francisco

Thanks guys, I'll be there in a few months and will have a look.

Wow, way down there, I'm usually on foot, not surprised I never found it.

Just type "tad gear" into Google

I didn't know they were so close, I will definitely do a visit. But no way I'm buying anything at retail with tax on top :(

I've been there a bunch of times. Their production knives don't have the best pricing, but their customs and TAD Gear collab knives can be pretty good deals. They retail for less than they tend to sell on the secondary market, depending on the model. Same thing for some of their TAD Gear exclusive non-knife items.

thanks guys for all the tips. I'll probably check out we be knives and see if we get by armor-geddon in cupertino.
Now I have to go catch the flight :)

As long as the knife is not automatic, and you wear it so the pocket clip is visible, you should be fine in San Francisco and nearby areas.

TAD Gear is good for pricier limited edition knives. For production stuff, try Katachi inside the mall in Japantown and Columbus Cutlery (SAK heaven) on Columbus and Vallejo. Reasonable prices.

There aren't any knife laws against concealing folders, so long as the folder is legal.

The only knife that needs to be carried open or visible in California are fixed blades or folding knives that are open.

Knife laws here are fairly simple though there are some parts that can be confusing. But pretty much they are this...

Fixed blade knives cannot be carried concealed they must be carried in a sheath on the hip or belt. There is no limit on blade length.

Folders and assisted openers can be carried openly or concealed in a pocket, purse, etc. There is no limit on blade length.

One can have a switchblade or automatic opening knife provided that the blade is less than 2" long.

Brass knuckles, buckle knives, "dirks or daggers" having blades longer than 2" and a few other things are misdeameanors ti have on you.

Open carrying of knives is common out here. In some parts of the Bay Area a leatherman or a Buck on the hip is as common as a cell phone. If you are carrying a machete on your hip, and you are not working in ag, some cop will likely stop you and ask about it, but short of that no problem. You can get all the S&W, MagTech, or CRKT knives you want at a Big 5.

Some localities do have other restrictions, mostly of the "tack on this charge" type.
