Hey all, wouldn't ya know,if something can go wrong.... Had everything all planned out to have my forge, and my grinder motor by early aug and kick it into high gearForging KSO's and refining what little i do know from the ABS school. But, it looks like as of right now ,come sept,or oct ill be on my way to the sandbox for 8 mos. I'm going as an armorer so i may be able to bring a small forging set up,If it is small enough.I need suggestions that would help me minimize what i could take with me as far as weight/equipment/size. Any and all advce is as always greatly appreciated. I kinda want to get a head start now so i can perhaps refine a bit before i go. Thank you all
kevin

Well, since you are going for 8 months, I doubt you are going to Al Udeid. But, I venture to say you will stop there on your way for a connecting flight. Who knows I might gas up your plane when you leave to come home, beings that I am going to probably end up there AGAIN in January. Hopefully you will be going closer to the end of the year so it isnt as hot. Hey, since you are an armorer, can you score me some range time to get my re cert on M9? Gettin the 60 added to my weapons card would be nice too!!:D :D

one brick forge (do a search for it). hammer. chunk of flat steel for an anvil
some files, some paracord for handles. try to keep your knives basic and you can eliminate a lot of tools

What is said above and some steel that is of a known quality. You can look for things to forge over there and get good at it, but when you go to heat treat something it is best to do your quality work on a quality piece and not be 2nd guessing.

Of course it would be cool to have a knife made from a piece of an disarmed IED (I am thinking something forged in a can) or the spring of a bad guys car, even if it didn't hold an edge real well.

Just be careful over there.

thanks guys,i appreciate the help,i have looked into one brick forges, don't know many details at this point ,just trying to be a litle prepared. Any ideas for an anvil?

Just keep your head down. As a Grunt Vet. my self I have more friends that were hurt in support fields than grunts.
Thank you for your service.
I made a knife in Okinawa with only a file, a C-clamp, and a piece of copper pipe. The knife was made from lief spring. The copper pipe was to blow in to a wood fire to get it hot enough to anneal. filed to shape. Reheated in wood fire with lots and lots of lung power and quenched in salt water from the Pacific. Tempered in the coals by eye and luck. This is only an example of what can be done with very Little. As an armorer you probably have better tools than I ever thought of as a Grunt. After I made that first knife in Okinawa I got hocked up with the support crew for the Tankers. They had every tool I could think of and we made lots of knives.

thanks mike i appreciate it,sad thing is im technically a grunt too,lol security forces,USAF and by the way, thank you for YOUR service! my best goes out to all vets,I don't care what branch they serve or served with. Biggest reason other than a way to keep sane over there is to give em to troops who need em. Hope i can take a few things with me.
