Some of you guys/gals with your MINI kits stowed away in maxpedition pockets (like in the RAT Cutlery contest thread) and stuff got me thinking. So i grabbed my DS Tactical Blow Out pouch (locally made right here in Vancouver BC) and built yet another mini kit. :p

The pouch itself is designed to hold a pair of latex or nitrile gloves, trauma shears and a Israeli Bandage/tourniquet kit. Its deigned so one can pop the fastex buckle, pull the pouch off the base and get to work stopping a hemorrhaging wound . I carry one of the Blow Out Pouches on my chainsaw pants belt.

this is the pouch: (stock photo, courtesy of the wrecking crew at DS Tactical (aka Dave's Surplus)

inside the mesh pocket, i put a Pelican clipboard light, with both red and white LED's, a small Rite In The rain notebook and pencil stub, a Bark River Micro Slither knife and a small DMT pocket hone, mini lighter , tiny ziplock with a 6" x 6" dressing, couple of butterfly's, band aids and pair of tweezers from a SAK.

behind the 2 elastic webbing straps at the inside rear of the pouch i tucked away a folding heat sheet, a small mirror, a Powerbar, and a loop of hemp cord.

in the main space of the pouch, i put a firesteel/striker, P/J/wax cotton balls in a orange matchcase and a Mil triox bar, a Spyderco Manix, waterpure tabs, whistle, compass, and another powerbar. There is still a bit of room left.

on the outside of the pouch in the 2 webbing loops i tucked an orange garbage bag.

the back of the pouch base panel has both PALS webbing and a belt loop. I decided to just wear the pouch and the base panel on my belt, so i ditched the MALICE clips. Beside the pouch on my belt I can put whatever fixed blade i want to carry.

to access the contents of the pouch i can either undo the fastex buckle and open the zippers, or undo the fastex buckle and pull off the pouch from the base , allowing me to open it fully on the ground.

perfect little kit for a dayhike, wander away from camp, or for ultralight hiking.

ACTION & GEAR loading pics soon, need to go back to a friends and use her camera after the long weekend.

That looks pretty good...needs to come in ACU for me. Our issue FAK pretty large and since I usually carry my M9 on my IBA, there's less room for the larger FAK...this would be a much better size for the essentials.

Interesting minimalist pack but at $49.95 pretty expensive. More than a Proteus and almost as much as Pygmy Falcon. They would not serve your purpose, just illustrate the price point.

That's a great little kit!
I have been contemplating one myself and have not found the right pouch, but that one looks like about what I had in mind. I have several kits that are too big or too small - that looks to be about right for what I want.

Thanks for sharing.

thanks! I've carried this more often than any other kit i have (including my drop leg EOD pouch, which is my all time favorite piece of kit.) its so easy to just grab and go.

this one is unnoticeable on the belt, i put my large chopper next to it and i can hike light and fast.

worth every penny.

I might be blind, well I know I am kinda, but do you have a way to purify water?

yea i have iodine from RAEM's (Alberta company). To be honest i have been drinking our water here all my life (36 years) without purifying it. Grew up drinking creek water. Never been sick.

Yeah, the further north you go the cleaner it gets I find.

I trust your experience with your local water but one of my canoeing partners got giardia while running the Big Salmon River in the Yukon. Even far north, I'm pretty chicken when it comes to untreated water.

looks like a great kit, but why the two small knives?

why not replace one with a SAK or other multi?

just curious as to your reasoning for the 2 small fb

I find Saks and multitools to be utterly useless in the woods,( my 2 cents,) i just dont use them. (in the city they reign supreme)

the BRKT Trickle is a great wee blade for delicate work (clothing repair, fine shavings for fire making, whittleing etc). The MykulMorris File necker is a great PSK balde, brutally tough, wicked sharp and has a flat profile which makes packing easy.

those compliment the large chopprs and folder (ussually my Emersons) that i wear ont he belt and keep in the jeans pocket.

Nicely-selected and well-thought out gear! Thanks for sharing.

Coincidentally (since this pouch was designed for field trauma care) it actually looks similar to a locally-made one here, just a tad larger and less technical though. It was used by a former colleague of mine who taught TacMed to the troops in a drop-leg set up.

yeah, not liking a knife is up there isn the list of reasons to not use one.:p

once I actually used the saw on one of my SAKs I was forever changed, I'm still waiting to hear back from scibeer so I can get one or two(dozen:D) moded, I think I'm gonna replace the cap lifter and can opener on a farmer with another blade, maybe a small blade magnifyer or just another large blade. That one will be or an emergency kit, I want to get another that has just the blade saw and awl. Very handy, for me.

It's a good looking kit!
