I have asked about this a couple of times in the past and never gotten a good answer. People have told me about engraving and undercutting, then pounding the gold into the engraving, but that is not what I was asking. So, I figured I would show a picture of what I am talking about. This is an old Al Pendray (RIP) wootz integral hunter. It has a fairly polished finish on the blade and it looks like he just plated his horseshoe P logo on the surface. Any idea how he might have done it?

The mark was etched and then brush plated through the original stencil.
Just plating the gold on the surface would make it difficult to see and it would wear rapidly.

Bill, the Pendray knife appears to not be etched, but in your experience, can you etch then lay down the nickel layer first with the brush and then the gold using regular red vinyl stencils?

I have never etched with stencils.
You can plate gold directly on carbon steel- no underplate is necessary.
That said- yes. Etch, clean, brush plate.
