The nick in the spine is made by Spyderco factory to denote that it is a second, and carries no warranty. It is absolutely unrelated to damage and is not a stress point. The simplicity of the mechanism and the tolerances with which Spydercos are built, yes built, mean that warranty repairs and returns are extremely unlikely anyway. I'm just not a fan of S30V or VG10 in general.
