Gonna tease a little. :)

Can't wit to see your new score BCCL!

Short story:
I always wanted one of those but they sell just above my price range. Then I found one listed on Craigs list a few towns over for $70. As luck would have it, sold before I made contact. However, two weeks later it was for sale in the town just a little farther away, this time for $100 and it also came with a 112. One phone call and a short drive the two Buck knives became mine. The sellers were a young couple and the fellow stayed in the car and his lady made the deal. She said are you a hunter? My husband is not a hunter and did not need a hunting knife like this.......I did not want to touch that comment with a ten foot pole (the guy just sat in the car all deflated looking). The 184 was perfect a little rubbing from the sheath, no scratches, had the sheath and one pouch, missing one pin and no compus. It sits proudly on my desk in the man cave. What a fantastic Buck knife.

You got 2 new knives, but he needed a new wife. :)

As a youngster in the mid-80s I lusted after the Buckmaster but couldn't really afford it, and quite honestly, had no real use for it. In 2013 I finally decided to seriously look for one and found a 1985 pre-patent version in very good condition on eBay. I decided to not worry about over paying, pulled the trigger, and finally owned this iconic knife. Congrats and welcome to the club!

Fresh out of the mail truck!

It's used, but in good shape. Whoever sharpened it knew what they were doing, it will shave arm hair.

It had a small pouch on the sheath, but I don't think it was original and it was in horrible shape, so I tool it off.

If I'm reading Rich's book right, this is a 6th variation, the most common one.

Knife is sound, I only have one concern, and it's been so long since I even handled one I'm not sure if it normal or not, and that is no matter how tight I screw the pommel piece into the handle, the lanyard piece will still turn around freely.

Is this normal?

It came with one "surprise", at some point someone stuffed a cotton ball with petroleum jelly all the way to the bottom of the hollow handle...MANY years ago...I finally got it out, but it was nasty. :)

I believe it is norman and intentional that the lanyard tab rotates. I'm sure I'll be corrected though.

Awesome knife! I just misssd an unused black one at my local shop. The guy who bought it didn't hide well enough like he usually does. Oh well...

It looks to be in better than good shape. As for the lanyard hole attachment turning, could you add another o-ring?

Probably, may need to replace the one that's there altogether. It's showing it's age, and flattened out somewhat.

I'm trying to see if any pages that deal with them give the O ring size, but may just have to take it to a hardware store with me.

Very nice score!! I have always wanted one of those yet it has not come to me as yet....someday....Thanks for the pictures and congratulations!

If you have a Caterpillar Rental Store or dealer near you, they always have an excellent supply of high-quality o-rings (and other hardware....)

Congratulations, that's a looker for sure! I believe they came with a pouch on the sheath so it might have been original. For the O-Ring do a search for AS 568-116 Viton O-Ring. It's a .75" I.D. O-ring.

Very nice Buckmaster, not over sharpened and no scratches. A new o-ring should tighten everything up. I checked my same version and it tightens so the lanyard does not turn. It has the thinner knurled pommel and I had a hard time with my arthritis but did tighten it.
