Gonna Try My First Microtech

Archman, sorry I'm going to need to see video evidence of your Socom before I believe it.;)

A $150 Spyderco Military is as well made as the Microtech.

The thing that got me looking at Microtech was a few people posting in a thread a while back that the Socom was an 'upgrade' to the Spyderco Military.

I love the Military so I wanted to see for myself! Then I saw one for a great price and now it's making it's way to me :D

I currently own a Socom Delta which I love and will never let go. Had an Ultratech for a short time (couldn't legally carry it).

Also had an Elmax DOC for a while, sold it, and now really regret it. Just realize, it's pretty darn big.

My only gripe is that they chose to make the handles out of aluminum instead of G10. It also rides pretty high because of the clip but that wasn't such an issue for me.

Personally, I think Microtech makes some of the best looking knives out there and they function beautifully in my experience.

Death On Contact PPPfffftttt!!! Puleeeze, are you planning on stabbing somebody with it?

The styling is a little over the top for me. Lots of complaints about the clip, which normally wouldn't be a big deal to take off the clip and grind the end off a bit but with the proprietary screws you can't do that.

It's personal opinion of course but I prefer the simplicity of a SMF or SNG. The DOC is also over 7 ounces, heavier than an SMF and way heavier than a SNG. I prefer the size of an SNG the SMF/DOC is a bit large for me.

If you're against buying a Strider because you've bought into the indignation over Mick Strider's character then you should also be against buying a DOC. The DOC was designed by Mick Strider, and has his name on it. I'm sure he makes money off the design therefore if you buy one you're putting money in his pocket. ...so you might as well by a Strider.

I could be tempted by a SNG sized DOC but only if it didnt' say, "Death on Contact" on the side of it, that's lame.

I just got a DOC. VERY good tolerances BUT mine came with an uneven swedge... That aside, it's a brilliantly built rocket fast opening knife. The detent is very strong though, meaning the stop pins are stop pins only atop pins and not thumb studs, though some people get docs with weaker detects that allow the stop pins to be used as studs

Coming around to the flippers eh? As much as i'm not a fan of Microtech for their design "borrowing" ethics, this one and the Whaleshark are pretty good looking.

What gets me is Microtech uses that V shaped backspacer, where the blade sets closed. It seems to be to show how perfectly the blade is centered closed. Or is supposed to be centered. Yet most of them are not centered and this V shape really makes it jump out. I had a WhaleShark and it was far from centered closed, plus I found the handle too small for the blade size. It had a huge blade and a little handle that was a lot more apparent in person. I sent it back as soon as I got it. This would make me think before I'd drop 300 bucks on a DOC too... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1089134-microtech-doc-fit-and-finish

Same with some ZT's and some Bucks. But, you never hear much about that for some reason.

Im a huge Microtech fan! I have a number of their knives including some OOTF autos a Crosshair and a new DOC. I think Microtech makes some extremely high quality knives. I would even give them the edge over Benchmade for their attention to detail.

My DOC is my latest Microtech. I love the knife but I realized that the way the lock was designed and the way I hold my knives when I take them out of my pocket makes the DOC very hard to open because Im putting pressure on the detent. I have to consciously move my finger off to open it smoothly and easily with the flipper. Otherwise I love the knife.

That DOC is one ugly knife. :)

Microtechs are probably good knives. I have stayed away due to the proprietary hardware, requiring purchase of one-of-a-kind tools at questionable prices. Also, I've read too many horror stories about their customer relations/service in these pages.

I have no problem with their quality though. I know most are good knives. But for now I'll stick with buying ProTech and other brands of auto.

^--- +1 Do yourself a favor, before you plunk down your cold hard cash, run a search in GB&U and look at the customer service/warranty repair issues threads.
Microtech is off my buy list until they get their service department sorted out.

Good luck!
