What do you all consider to be a good all-around caliber for Northeastern big game(whitetail & black bear)?

I said the .300 mag, simply because I like the round. Any of the rounds that you listed would have enough punch to do any sort of Eastern game.

.308 works for me. We have pretty much the same critters down here as you guys. the .270 is fine for deer, but I'd want something with a little more ass for a bear. The other two, .30-06 and .300 mag, are a bit much for deer, though I'd feel comfortable shooting a bear with either. Therefore, the venerable .308 gets my vote.

Its hard to beat the .30-06 for versatility, load data, and availability of factory ammo. Plenty of power and range for the lower 48. Mac

.270 is a dandy deer round.. But if your are adding moose and Black bear to the quota ..30-06 would be a good bet... My personal favorite is 30/30 or 20 gauge slugs... but I don't hunt bear or moose and I'm a wierdo to begin with...

45-70 !! For most of the area magnums have no place. The 270 130Gr at shorter ranges may be a stopper but ruins lots of meat. 7-08 and 308 are all you need .Of the older ones 30-30 is popular but 35 Rem is better and 45-70 is better still.I hunted deer with a 6.5x55 [original loading please !!] for 25 years and it never let me down. I then switched to the 45-70 and it also performed very well.

These are all incredible rounds for NA game. I own rifles in all of them. My favorite is the .270 for its accuracy, long range, shootability, etc. The .308 is a very close second.

I'd have to second the 45-70. If one chooses a bullet appropriate for the task at hand and stays within the the effective range of the cartridge/bullet there is no game animal the round can't put down.

I have a fair amount of .308 milsurp that I like to use for plinking and for training new shooters. Although no ammo is cheap now, it's probably the most reasonable. Of course, that only matters if you plan to shoot a lot and don't feel like reloading for the rifle.

If you thought you weren't going to shoot much but might make a trip West for elk some day, I'd give a slight preference to the '06 and 300.

Any will do, I would go with '06 just because it's easier to find ammo for and it has the versatility of going light for white tail and heavy for bear. But, like has been said, any will get the job done.

.30-06. It is and always has been, my favorite rifle. (Because it was my dads, and my grandpas gun.)

I find myself feeling more and more old school lately, so I'll vote for the .30-06, too.

O.K. I'll vote for the 7x57 just to be different

I'll second that. I've been eyeballing the stats on the .338 Federal lately. Looks like a super nice round. I've got a couple of 98 Mauser actions, one of them will probably wind up in .338 Federal, the other in 7x57 (for sure).

I had to vote for my favorite round. The 7.92X57 (8mm Mauser).

Nothing in New England will take a 170gr Remington Core-Lokt without going down.

Of the choices you listed, the .30'06 is the quintessential do-all round for pretty much anywhere, with few exceptions.

Although, I do have a real soft spot for the .45-70.

I think 7 mm & 8mm Mauser are over looked. They are out there in many strong Mauser rifles and many of the major manufacturers made them as well. Not a lot of recoil and shoot well. I have had old Mauser rifles in both calibers and currently have on in 7mm. I have taken black bear in Canada with an 8mm with no trouble. Doug

The first rifle I purchased when I turned 18 was a Model 70 in 30-06 so I am kinda partial to that caliber. Still have that rifle after almost 20 years

I'm a big fan on the .300 WinMag. It'll take anything in North America and there are more and more rounds being loaded for it.
