Looking for something small to pu in a back pack while camping...I was considering the one that comes with the mora 200o at ragweed forge, but am open to other suggestions. Thanks

I would recommend the Gransfors Bruks Mini Belt Hatchet if you want something small, or the Wildlife Hatchet if you want something more "normal hatchet sized". Check over the Axe & Hawk forum and you'll find all the info you want, and more.

And, to pimp my own thread more, check this for a comparison between various choppers by a very inexperienced user. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=460134

I've got a small poll 'hawk from K5 tactical. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. The finish is a desert tan which I don't like, but it really doesn't matter since its for camping and will get beat up. The size and construction are first rate and it seems to hold an edge really well.

got 2 for you the estwinwing no.1 with the leather stacked handle. I personally cut down a 10 inch birch tree just prove my wife wrong and we needed fire wood. the other is : if you can find one : marbles hunters Axe no.9db double bit. both have worked well for med

I like the Estwing hand axes. They work well, are inexpensive, and you can buy them anywhere.

Fiskars/Gerber has small fancy axes, and get the folding saw while you are at it :)

I have not tried the big Fiskars axes, I have the smallest one but if you are to get a Fiskars axe, get a bigger one. I guess the plastic handle will take the beating, there must be someone here who has one.

Riley, don't get the Gransford Bruks if you do not want another addiction. They are so well made and come so sharp that they will addict you.

I have a small Gerber/Fiskars made in Finland with the plastic handle. It has rode in my pack many a time and I would not hesitate to suggest it to anyone. It works excellent for hacking up deadfall for a back country camp. My only complaint is that for some reason it blisters me up pretty bad when I do a lot of chopping with it, more so than any other hatchet I own. That said, if you are going out for several nights in the backcountry, bang for buck it's a hard tool to beat in my mind.

Last year I had exactly the same question. After a bunch of research I ended up with the Kershaw Camp Axe (model 1018)

Under a pound, 1-piece construction, Krayton handle, lifetime warranty. Comes with kydex (?) head sheath with integral belt slot. List price of $39.95. What's not to like.\?

I remember that thread. Now that you've had it a while, how has it performed for you?

I like the Ratchet from Swamp Rat, but it can be difficult to find one...try the For SAle forums. Any of those stated will do you well! :)

Another vote for the Fiskars and/or Gerber 14" camp axe. I have a Fiskars and a Gerber. The Gerber I bought a number of years ago, and it has held up beautifully. A few months ago I purchased the Fiskars version at a local Menard's for $16.99. I think I originally paid over $30 for the Gerber back in the day, and it is identical to the Fiskars (although the Gerber came with a sheath.

The Gerber has chucked a lot of wood, both via chopping an with a baton. I have never had an issue with blisters during extended use. The only problem I have encountered is getting it back after loaning it out at the campsite!

Another vote for the small Gerber/Fiskars axe. I have the hatchet and used it all the time until I started using my Becker BK-1 for the same tasks. I would not hesitate to use the hatchet if I accidentally grabbed it first. It works great.
