Here comes another one for the gerber and fiskars axes, and even their saws. True, their knives aren't so good nowadays, but the make some fine axes and saw for the price.
And another vote for the gerber / fiskars. I have a shop I heat with wood and Sometimes I get short on woodscraps for kindling so I dig into the firewood pile and split some. I have a 2 pound small sledge that I Baton the hatchet with. The head hasn't budged a bit. Don't know how they do that but the thing is TOUGH. I also use it for camping and clearing shooting lanes around my deerstands.
I used it for chopping roots of about 15 trees I dug out in my back yard. No blisters, but a sore arm for sure.
Mine's new, but I'll add another vote for the Fiskars hatchet. It's came quite sharp and sharpened up more very easily. I've done finer work with it and some light chopping and it has held up very well. For the price, I think it would be hard to do better.
