I have been reading for a while and just recently started posting. I know what I want my equipment to be except for the metal cutting bandsaw (drill press as well). I want good stuff that I don't have to buy again later. Would any of you experienced knife makers care to offer any advice?

I just worked with my HF portaband again last night. As much as I love it, it's awfully loud. Muffs are definitely needed with it. That's my only complaint about it. Now, if I can just find a diamond blade for it, I have some stones and glass to cut.

I use a Princess Auto portable band saw, same as the HF, but not as powerful. I don't find it loud but its still new. A base is easy to make to hold it vertical heres my ghetto set-up

I still need to make a bigger talbel for it, that will be done tomorrow or Friday

Unky, glad to see you went with the support by the handle. I just painted my base and had forgotten how light the saw is without the 20lb. base!

What is your budget. In this category you are talking $$$ well much more than a Dewalt portaband which is what I have.

Patrice. I want something with more balls that goes low and is around 500 bucks.

Well the 4X6 don't really have more balls as you say and are in the 200-300$ range. I had one and it was crap. Not saying all are but my Dewalt cuts circles around it. As far as speed it goes down to 80 rpm.
Now as you can see on the Grizzly link, after that we are talking about standing bandsaws and we are in the above 1100-1200$ range. That is "import" quality of course. Let us know what you settle on and how you like it.

I was back in my younger days. If you recognize the MOS then you must of served in a similar capacity.

First, thank you for your service :) But no I'm no veteran. However, practically all my neighbors and close family friends have served or are serving now so the jargon rubs off on me. West Point has always been my dream for college though so who knows.

Now then... I'd definitely pick the HF over the Grizzly. That Grizzly is probably the same or similar to the HF 4x6 band saw. I actually wouldn't be surprised if they were made by the same company over in the far east. That being said, the HF you can get for half the cost. Plus you get support from a bunch of people here who have used it for 5+ years with no complaints.

Unky- thanks for the pics, I have been looking for pics like that for days now.

Although, for the extra $100 why not go for the HF horiz/vert bandsaw?

The biggest difference between the portaband and the horizontal/vertical unit is portability and size. I have room for a portable, not for the bigger unit. My understanding is that the power is about the same.
