i have a source at an eaton manufacturing plant and he says that they just throw away all of their worn out or outdated tooling. would this be good steel for forging into blades?

Yep, find out what the steel is. He might try to tell you "tool steel", but that's not enough information. You're looking for a combination of letters and number like "A2," "D2," "O1," or similar.

"Tool steel" is like the phrase "light duty pickup truck." You're in the ballpark, but you don't know what it is you're dealing with. You need "1999 Ford Ranger." Now you've got the information. You can get the manual, you can find the parts, you can ask somebody whether they've ever owned one.

Steel's the same way. Find out what it is and you might have made a great score.

Getting that info is sure alot easier than trial and error. Playing backyard metallurgist takes alot of time and heartache.
