Technology of Machine Tools
by Steve F. Krar, Arthur R. Gill Peter Smid, Steve Krar

There have been a few questions posted lately on – how to use a mill which included …recommend a good book on machine tools.

I am a bit late in posting this so I am putting it in a new thread for all to find easier.

This link is an Amazon link for a book which is used as a text in the machining courses at my local College.

I have a copy and find it very useful and easy to understand.
It is rated very highly on Amazon also.

On the down side, I do find that it is an “old” book with some new updates.
For example photos of machine tools are either from the 50’s or the very newest CNC equipment.
The info about cemented carbides is dated, stating that the use of them is limited, expensive and unusual…maybe true at one time, but as far as I know, not the case now.

Overall it is very good and used widely.
It is well suited to me for basic knowledge as i am doing everything manually.

Are there any other good books out there you can recommend?

CNC Programming Handbook by Peter Smid.

Obviously, it goes into writing code for CNC controls, but it also goes into machining strategies in general and the use of different types of tooling. An excellent book for anyone using CNC or involved in production machining.

How about a good book for for those of us with small lathes and milling machines, non cnc. Good basics and all that. Thanks Jim
