God, how times have changed. I received my first knife when I was 7 years old. My brother got the first SAK that I had ever seen for Christmas in 1949 and he gave me his old single blade Barlow, the one that he had carried since he was about 7-8 years old. He was about to turn 12 at the time. He and my Dad spent quite some time teaching me the manly art of sharpening with oil stones and a strop and I kept that baby very sharp. Dad taught that it was the dull knife that hurt you as that was the one with which you became careless. I have carried a pocket knife of one sort or another ever since.
Dtownknifekid, may is suggest that you consider a Spyderco Delica. They are very easily carried, they can be had in colors other than tactical black, are about as reasonably priced as you will find for something of their quality, and are known to make a very good SD choice. The new Delica4 with dual steel liners can even be openned very, very quickly with a Spyderco drop by pinching the Spyderhole and giving the knife a good downward shake. But it looks to be a very useful everyday tool sort of thing, especially if you find one with a color other than black. I suggest the other colors as they tend to set people's minds more at ease.
But, by all means, discuss this with your parent or the person who is responsible for you. If you simply go out an get a knife w/o permission, you are asking to have it confiscated by your parents/guardians.
