Thinking of getting a bowie style knife. Trying to keep the budget around $100. I don't expect to chop down trees with it, but it's going to be a gift, and I'd like to give them a fully functional knife. Any suggestions?

Given your budget I suggest checking out Atlantic Cutlery Corp. They carry a good selection of Bowies in different styles at modest prices. For a using Bowie I prefer high carbon steel over stainless. ACC offers a Mexican Bowie of 1085 high carbon steel; the blade is 103/4 inches; under $80. Add a few dollars and you can get it engraved.

+1 on the Ontario Marine Raider, 1095 Carbon, classic Bowie Profile, gets rave reviews for performance, definitely on my short list and comes in around $60 or so bucks, also Kabar offers an XL classic Kabar called the big brother, 1095 carbon and you can get it with the classic leather handle!
I know i'd appreciate getting a bowie for a gift!

Becker BK9 is a functional bowie style knife with which you can chop down trees. It's well within your price range.
