Good cause to leave my knives to?

So, not trying to be a bummer here, but one of these days I'm going to croak - just thinking ahead.
I have a couple of firearms and a stack of knives that my sister (if she's around when I go) will likely just dump off at the police station and walk away.
It would be a shame to not put the value of my stuff towards a decent charity.
Not sure how to go about this... hopefully I'll have decades to make up my mind.
Any reputable organizations that would auction off my stuff for a good cause? Something for kids, maybe?
To be honest, I'd like to be somewhat selective in who might be eligible to receive my goods.
People who actually would need a knife for work, or reasonable play - gackheads, chest puffers and psychos need not apply.

Can someone point me is some good directions here?
Thanks.

I hear that Bob W is a charity case, and is none of those things. :D

Seriously, your best bet is to assign them to someone you trust. Instruct that they be sold and the money donated to a charity of your choice. Or sell them yourself and spend/donate the $$ before you croak.

Not an easy question.

Why not give them to the NRA? They have a program just for that purpose. Or maybe Knife Rights?

send them to a wilderness survival camp. let them keep what they need for training and stuff, and they can do what they want with the rest.

Having seen this happen before, I'd just start selling off when I felt I was getting close, if you catch my drift. Start dumping the stuff I didn't like as much, and then just drop a few more of as you get older.

The problem with willing them to organizations or relatives is that most don't understand knives or how to sell them, so you get most of your estate being sold for pennies on the dollar. Much better to just give a cash gift to them or the people you care about.

termiteslayer,
There is a clause in my will that the "camping/hunting" type knives will be donated to the local Boy Scout troop, the "family" knives will be given to my son, & the balance of the knives are to go to my gun club to be raffled off.
All of the knives are designated in the will so there is no confusion when that time comes, & I like you, hope I have decades left as well. Funny how 20 years ago, retirement and certain life lessons like this were the farthest things from my mind.

Do you mind if I ask how old you are?

Are you to old to have children, and does your sister have any?
I'm dought she would take them to the police station and give them away.

Make a list of what you have and about what worth, with INFO on where to sell(here and/or ebay), and let her sell them for herself, or her children. She very well may even want to keep them.

I would keep it in the family myself, as some of those knives may mean something to someone in your family that may not even be born yet.
I've got some stuff from my grandfather, and a couple of great unckles that died before I was born, and I'm glad to have something that was there's.

Yeah, I think you're better off selling them and donating cash since I don't think most regular folks know what to do with knives.

In many states, all you need to do is make reference in your Last Will & Testament to your "List of Tangible Personal Property," which describes how all of your smaller personal items (e.g. jewelry, watches, guns, knives, clothes, etc.) are to be distributed upon your croaking. Said list can usually be prepared at any time before or after the execution of your Will, so long as it's dated and signed by you and in your own hand. You can also update or change it at any time up until your death (I mean croaking).

I would suggest leaving you personal property to someone whom you trust to do the right thing. If you have no such person, then pick your favorite charity, and provide (again, in your Will) for the proceeds from the sale of those items to be donated to that charity. The Probate Court will assign an Executor for your Will if you do not choose one, and that person will be required follow your last wishes.

Of course, I'm assuming that you have a Will. If not, and you're obviously thinking about property disposition, then that would be the first step. Your attorney can be of further assistance specific to your jurisdiction.

You should consult with your own lawyer about your specific situation.

Got no family you can leave them too ?? My son's gonna inherit about $5G worth of knives when I go . I want to be buried with a couple of my favorites , in case I need them in the afterlife ( especially if I go south )

Make a will and have a trustworthy executor is my best advice.
