Good Cheap Backpack

get a camel-back... greatest pack to have for a hiker covers your water (for day hikers almost all of the weight) Also she can use it for a bunch of differnt applications with or without the bladder etc.
 
You might consider a nice haversack or possibles bag, so you don't have to guess fit. Plus, she can use it outside of camping.
 
My wife uses one of those Gregory Reactor packs that Smersh linked to. Small, but well made and carries nicely.
