Good, Cheap, Knife Brands?

CRKTM16-01T_2.jpg

This CRKT titanium knife is great for business men and for discreet
carry, plus it's beautiful. And it's reasonably priced. It has an AUS8 blade
and has excellent edge holding capabilities.

I carried one of the CRKT models, with a similar layout, while working in a business casual dress environment for a while. I found that the texture on the thumb stub was wearing holes in my pockets. They are a somewhat rough texture. To a small extent, the textured screw also caused wear as well. I was noticing the wear on my jeans too.

I find that the K55K is an excellent "cheap" knife but the carbon steel models, for some reason, seem to commonly come with the blades off center. As such they're more commonly available on my site under the "Grade B" section rather than as a standard "Grade A" item. The stainless ones seem not to be as prone towards that issue for some reason.

Now that I own one I'll put in a plug for Meyerco. My newShockwave is one of my favorite $50 range knives I've ever owned.

I think everyone has it pretty well covered...In approximate decreasing order of price; Spyderco, Byrd, Boker, Svord, Opinel.
The Spyderco, Byrd and Boker have more of a modern feel, while Svord and Opinel are a bit more ye olde world. There is also probably something in the truly massive CRKT and Cold Steel ranges to suit you too. Enjoy!!

Are you a fixed blade fan or a folder fan? And what do you consider "cheap"?

Folders, I usually say kershaw, Byrd/some Spyderco, benchmade, Victorinox. I have not been happy with any of my CRKT purchases, so I avoid them now. Meyerco also has some cool stuff.

Fixed blades, you've got most of the best ones, IMO, except for Condor.

Nothing wrong with liking what you like though.

I have to recommend Victorinox Swiss Army Knives...

Get a Spartan if you wanna EDC around town. Get a Farmer if you want a outdoors knife. But I can promise that once you start buying SAKs, you will keep buying them. They are such a great value that its way too easy to justify. I should have 2 more coming in the mail today!

Also, check out ESEE. Gotta love those Izulas. Thats probably the next fixed blade I'll get. Then again, if you are already into Beckers you make have all the nitches filled that an ESEE might be useful in. Also, besides their smallest two knives, they are expensive-ish (IMO).

EDIT:

Look at Condor knives! I can't believe I forgot that! CONDOR!

Mora clipper in carbon
OpInel #8 carbon
Victorinox combo deal Trekker & Classic
Can get all four for about 50.

Some of my favorite bang-for-buck companies:

Condor
Mora
Opinel
Svord
Douk Douk (M.C. Cognet)
Mercator
Victorinox

All produce high quality knives that perform well outside their price range. Other brands have many excellent values, but I find the above consistently deliver tremendous performance across their entire range of products, and for very little money.

I can only comment on the Opinel and Condor out of those. Both are great for the price!

I would add, Scrapyard to that list. Stellar tough knives at a great price point!

Boker Plus, Mora, Victorinox, Condor, Spyderco Byrd

But I can promise that once you start buying SAKs, you will keep buying them. They are such a great value that its way too easy to justify.

I just want to stress that point. Bought a classic then bought a spartan, another classic and an alox cadet in a couple of months. I have to exercise unbelievable self-control as i work next to an outdoors shop that has close to 20 models and i'm always tempted to just go and grab one on my lunch break/coffee breaks/way home... Fortunately they don't carry alox models...

Mora is hands down the cheapest best knife you'll ever own. My two cents.

nailed it! heavy duty companion for $15-$20. I also have a stainless 2.5MM for on the boat. Amazing Value. All the folders have been mentioned for the most part. I 2nd/3rd a Byrd folder in G10 for around $30

Enlan
Sanrenmu
Mora
Hultafors
Opinel
DoukDouk
Aitor
Boker Magnum
Victorinox
Byrd
Rough Rider
Marbles
CRKT
There are some great inexpensive knives out there.

Being a mostly budget knife buyer myself, the majority of my knife purchases are under 100 bucks. Personally I like some Browning, Schrade and even a few of the 440C Mtech knives. I have gotten a lot of hard use out of the ones I own without any issues. I also have some Kershaw's and Ares knives that I really like.
