I have started to get into knife and hawk fighting and I was looking for a good classic bowie that would function as a weapon but also a tool. I would go for the laredo bowie but it is too expensive. My main interest was the windlass bowies at Atlanta cutlery. What kind of steel is used to make these knives? Is it made out of leaf springs like a lot of knives coming out of india like kukris.

I'm looking for the same thing as well. I was seriously looking at a Laredo bowie, till I found out they didn't have a full tang. As far as I can tell, the Atlanta cutlery stuff is just high quality wall hangers. Could be wrong though. It seem like it would be easy to find a traditional styled, quality, large bowie. It seems like there's not a lot until you get into the custom made arena.

I have a Hen and Rooster Bowie that I paid exactly 100.00 for it and its full tang and stag handle. Its a great Bowie knife and looks just of the period. I would suggest that. Oh and it comes with a leather sheath.

yep, it has a full tang

•Features a 8.57-inch surgical stainless steel fixed blade
•Equipped with durable finger grooved wood with brass cross guard
•Full tang construction for increased strength
•Convenient size of 14.25-inches with a blade length of 8.75-inches and overall weight of 14.4-ounces
•Includes a ballistic nylon sheath

I actually like the looks of the Winchester bowie, even if it is a $20 knife at Wal-Mart. Still, being "surgical stainless" I'd pass on it unless you could find out exactly what the steel is and how it was heat treated.

~$60

Take a look at some Kissing Crane bowies. Here's a picture of one with black handle material. Also comes in yellow handle, and pearl handle. Can be found for around $60. Steel just says stainless steel but I suspect it is 440A, or maybe AUS6.

That kissiing crane is a wicked knife what is the steel like on it. is the thickness good and what is the sharpness out of the box thanks.

No, I don't have one. I just found it when I read your post and come up with a knife under $100. I would think the blade thickness would be around 3/16", but that is only a guess.
