Good coatings, Bad coatings

What is the coating that is used on Bucks Cabelas 110 and Bass Pro Shop 110. That is easily the toughest coating I have ever used. Anyone else have experience with this coating?

Isn't that a Ti nitride coating? Going by memory. I have some tools coated with that and it just doesn't wear off, even on drill bits that are used to drill metal.

Benchmade - look at it too long and it comes off

I don't have personal experience with the other manufacturers you listed, but I'm curious if that observation is that based on a newer Benchmade model? I've got a 722 that I've had for about 8 years that is beat to hell from frequent EDC and while the coating shows it, it has really hung in there.

I can see that where the finish has worn away, it wasn't sandblasted to rough up the surface prior to coating.

I'd be willing to bet that surface prep is as important, or even more important that the actual coating itself. Seems to be the case with pretty much everything I've ever painted, from houses to cars to guns.

Good discussion. Thanks for opening it.
