Good daggers in a ~5" blade with good modern steel?

If I might chime in with an ASP type baton closed length is about what the whole length of a 5 inch dagger will be and extended you have another foot or so of reach plus more heft for impact

Maybe check out the RMJ Tactical Raider Dagger? 5.375" Dagger in CPM 3V. The Spartan/EK collaboration in S35VN look really nice too.

I hear you with the humane aspect and carrying a firearm. However, the reality is that I won't be carrying a big stick or have a rifle slung when I really need it. Handguns have their own legal restrictions. Then there is the issue of having law enforcement called about the 'crazy nutjob checking his mailbox' with a rifle slung and other similar forms of harassment.

So while a compact rifle or even better, a shotgun, is preferred that isn't practical while I am out and about taking care of things. Having a rifle or shotgun in the pickup or on the tractor is nice but, only if I can get to it when I need it.

what ya need is a bull mastiff or argentine dogo or one of those 3/4 wolf 1/4 shepard wolf dogs..a big fierce and loyal dog that will protect its home and owner.

what kinda dogs are ya dealing with?

Honestly the nicest production dagger in the 5 inch plus catagory has to be the Extrema Ratio Supressor. The Kabar Ek dagger is nice too. For something abit smaller look at the Extrema Ratio Pugio.

There are other nice ones but that Supressor is the bidness.

After reading more on your situation I strongly recommend this with a shortened handle! Cold Steel Boar Spear.

Seriously, I agree . You really don't want to go hand to jaws with a dog . Human beings use standoff weapons against dangerous animals . Even a good stout walking staff would be much better .

Sword or Natchez Bowie at the very least !

You are in Oklahoma and Texas? Carrying a small pistol shouldn't be that much of a problem

It depends where you are and what 'barney fife' thinks. Some areas are lenient and some are on a political witch hunt. Illegal concealed carry isn't a line I will cross. I will CCW at some point but, I have some medical issues to sort out first. Don't get me started with DMV either .....

In most areas there are more legal restrictions surrounding carrying a dagger or fighting knife than a handgun assuming you have your CCW. If you're barred from owning firearms I can see going to edged weapons but even then I'd pick something with more general-purpose usability than a dagger. Having seen attack dogs go after people I can't imagine you'd have a chance of against one with a dagger. If you're not going to use a firearm maybe get one of those hog hunting spears and keep it nearby.

No worries about qualifying or being rejected by a background check. I have a very clean record and have no problem buying a firearm. CCW will happen at some point in the future.

Not to go too far off topic but, the dogs I'm dealing with are not 'trained attack' dogs. These are semi-feral 'pets' with bad dispositions that are protective of a public roadway between myself and my friends place. If they are on my property, my rifle will do its duty again but, these dogs don't present a 'safe' shot on my property (other houses, barns, public roadway, etc.).

We have separate issues with dogs on my friends property but, that is private property so I have discretion there with a 270 degree field of fire and safe backstop.

Cheap, but vicious if applied to a predator, is the Cold Steel Bowie Machete. If you want to increase its penetrative power, put an edge on the top of the clipped point using a file. You'll find it's a useful tool to own, too.

I'll chime in again, to agree with the ones above who said that if it's got to be a knife, make it a bit more versatile than a dagger while still being lethal and very effective against two or four legged predators. I wholeheartedly recommend these two

their pointy tips will pierce with the utmost ease, and they're very capable slashers, fast in the hand, really easy to sharpen, good grip and the CRKT has an extraordinarily well made sheath. None will break the bank, and their 7" blades will reach and tear the internals of the largest big cats/dogs out there

they will at the same time cut your food, slice that bag open or let you do normal knife tasks and chores around

^^^ can you name those models which you have pictured please?
Edit: found them off of their respective catalogs. Nevermind.

That CRKT in tan/brown looks pretty good.

Thanks! That RMJ Tactical Raider Dagger looks pretty good and the price point isn't too outrageous. The Spartan looks pretty good too but at that price point I would be tempted to step up to the Spartan V-14 Dagger.

If I had the money for one, this is what I would get.

I should note that I had a really nice German Shepherd that someone intentionally killed. I believe it was part of casing my farm house and barns for a robbery. My thermal scope and feral hog rifle never got satisfaction. I hope the criminal element that does this sort of thing burns in hell. That dog meant the world to me.

+1 on the baton suggestion. I had a similar situation at a former residence when there was an unknown vicious dog running loose for a couple of weeks. Guns and bows were not an option in that neighborhood. Whenever I went outside with my cats during that period, I carried an ASP 21” baton and a Shadow Tech Scorpion in addition to my EDC flipper. I figured if striking with the baton didn’t work, maybe I could manage to get the baton into the dog’s jaws, then use the Scorpion. Although the dog charged me twice within a week, I never had to use any of these weapons, and it never got closer to me than about 15 feet.

What stopped the dog in its tracks and made it turn tail both times was the other item I was carrying -- a handheld spotlight. It seems a couple million candlepower in the dog’s eyes changed its mind right quick, even during daylight. I never heard whether Animal Control finally caught the dog, but I never saw it again after that.

I had also considered carrying a double-edged fixed blade karambit instead of the Scorpion, so that might be another option to consider if you don’t find the ideal dagger, and you’re familiar with karambit technique. And keep a bright light handy… good luck!

Ashville Steel (Paragon) Warlock is a folding dagger. Might be easier to carry than a fixed blade.

This is definitely one of those threads where it seems like people need to remember to read through before they responds. While I initially also would have responded with non-knife options, S Sid Post has made it clear that he is not just a mall ninja. There are actual good reasons for your approach. Honestly, that is a little surprising to me considering the fact that I have always thought of daggers as good for pretty much only killing people, but you have a decent reason to carry one.

My personal recommendation would be a Boker Applegate Fairbairn Dagger. You can definitely find them in your price range (higher end).

If you were just carrying a dagger for self defense (from people) usually I would recommend a cheapo because it would just get taken by the police as evidence regardless of ultimate resolution, but in your case it isn't ridiculous to spend a little more on a nice knife. And since it would be one that you would carry a little more, and use for more than just being a pointy object, even the decent steel makes some sense.
