Good Eats and knives

I met Alton Brown a few years ago at Blade. He was carrying a few of the Cold Steel Kitchen Classic knives as well as some Kershaw knives. I got to speak to him and got his autograph. :D

Saw him use a Spydie Delica on the Garlic episode, and a SAK of some kind on one of the fish episodes. :)

Only thing that gets me is how he ties a surgeon's knot for brisket and roulades. Wrong! He grannifies it.

I looked at that ken onion knife, and it reaffirmed my previous observation that he is a talentless hack making the ugliest knives around :barf: :D

Hmmm, correct me if I'm wrong but if you're a Chef, I would assume one of your main tools is a sharp knife. In fact, don't cooking schools provide you with a set of your own knives when starting out. And you've heard of chef's and their favorite knife. Sushi chef's are fanatical about their knife etc.
I don't see anything wrong with A. brown snapping out a folder when chef's have more larger bladed instruments at their disposal.

You use what works best. I've prepared many a meal camping using nothing but a Scout knife, and done many a lab dissection using a small Swiss Army knife. If a folder is what works, use it. :)

His show isnt exactly what you would think of when you think "cooking show" he gives alot of info on picking ingredients at stores and picking kitchen gear. The leek I spotted was when he was in a grocery store and sliced into a leek (veggie) to show the cross section, the swiss army used in down in out in paradise was because the show theme was he was stranded on an island after a fishing trip and he was cooking with what he could find. He has several of the Kershaw Kai Shun kitchen knives with his fav being the 10" chefs knife. If you get the chance you should check out his show he not only gives you easy to cook recipes but he goes into the hows and whys of food science, plus the shows VERY entertaining and funny.

Alton is the official spokesman (and possibly sort-of designer?) of his own line of Kershaw Shun knives. Check out his site at www.altonbrown.com and you'll easily find the links to the knives.

He stated somewhere...I think it was in the "Rants & Raves" section on his site...that one of his first questions when Kershaw approached him was "do I get free knives?"

My favorite Alton/knife moment was in a recent episode where he appeared in a full-body costume as some kind of plant and, with a complete deadpan expression, whipped out a nice folder (I'm pretty sure it was a Boa) and sliced himself across the (costume) belly to allow "starch" grains to fall out (they were really packing peanuts).

Thought he used a Microtech on that episode where he was a corncob? Be nice if Mr. Brown was to view this forum and give us an answer!

Hrm...well I could be wrong about the Boa. Although I assumed it was very likely to be a Kershaw product since he's working with them. The night I saw that episode I poked around the Kershaw web site quite a while and the blue Boa sure seemed like a good match.

Here's a quote from Alton's page about blades:

"I admit it, I’m a bladeophile--I adore knives. Like my dad and my grand dads before me I carry a pocket knife at all times. But unlike my elders, one knife is not enough for me. I have 10 pocket knives and my favorite three, designed by Hawaiian blade smith Ken Onion, were manufactured by Kershaw in Portland Oregon. I’m also in lust with Kershaw’s new line of Shun kitchen knives, manufactured by the venerable KAI in Japan, which marry the finest elements of European and Asian style cutlery."

Yep. Been a "Good Eats" fan now for four or five years. Me and the wife and kids all like it. It's a show you can watch as a family where you don't have to pre-scan it for filth in order to view it with the family.
Alton Brown is indeed talented and entertaining. Never thought a cooking show would appeal to me but never say never.

Someone should try and contact Alton and tell him he needs to come hang out with all us knife nuts here at Bladeforums.com! :)

Good Eats is a great show, especially for guys cooking.

Of course, you have to love Rachael Ray and that host of Italian made easy.

Rachel Ray is cute, but Giada De Laurentis is just recockulisly hot.
