Good EDC-Work Knife

PM2/Manix2 "Blurple" G10/S110V. GB 1 or 2 in M4, KSF exclusive BM908 in M4, any of these will cut like nuts for a really long time, and hold up to anything reasonable that you can throw at them. At a super budget OKC just release a run if RAT1s in D2 steel, I think they are under $60.

Wow thanks for all the help. I've narrowed it down to either the Benchmade Griptilian Gray and Blue G10 Handle or the Benchmade HK Knives Axis 14715 Plain Edge Knife. Both look great and seem to have the same kind of specs.

In further developed news, can anyone recommend a good diamond sharpener?

Between the two you narrowed it down to I would say get the Grip. As far as sharpeners, get a sharp maker, and get the set of diamond/CBN rods to go with it, your should be able to maintain any blade easily.

If you can swing the extra dough, grab the full size G10 Grip in 20CV. I have both and like them for different reasons, but if I could only keep one, it's the G10 Grip.

I think the Adamas would be a good work knife if you don't mind the size and weight. Another good option but also big is the Benchmade 810 Contego. My favorite work knife is the Spyderco Manix 2, I have the version with Cruwear steel. But on the other hand the full size Griptilian would be a good work knife too. A lot of people like the Benchmade 940 or the 950 for work knives but they are a little smaller, maybe too small if you have big hands. In the lower price range people like the Spyderco Endura or the Ontario Rat 1.

Some have mentioned the zt 0350 I have large hands and found the handle a little short which made it to be uncomfortable in hand. Something to think about if you can't hold it in person prior to purchase.

Of those you list, I would go with the 950 Rift. Mine is a great work knife, and you can get it in S30V.

Thinking of Spyderco's as more delicate, umm, not to me. My most carried work knife is a Manix 2 XL. It's a beasty tough folder. Carry it more often than the Rift.

Or a ZT 0562. My favorite ZT so far, seriously tough work knife with great steel.

Post a pick of whatever you get and let us know what you think of it

The DMT Diafold Double Sided Sharpener (I'd recommend the fine/coarse one) can be had for about $30. If you're not an experienced sharpener, get one and sharpen all of the dull kitchen knives you can find (friends and family are good sources) before you try it on your better knives. You owe it to yourself to learn to sharpen freehand, if you're serious about knives. It's not as hard as people make it out to be.
There's also a Goodia diamond sharpener that runs less than $10, if money is tight. Same thing, only imported.

And Welcome to our world.

How has Nobody me toned the Spyderco Gayle Bradley?

M4 steel, quite a looker and Designed from the onset to be a Working knife that looks and feels like a high end folder...
I am Surprised at the lot ofyou... For Shame!

:D

If you want something a little more unique, get a Manix 2 cruwear.

Get the Griptilian with 154 Cm steel. Relatively light, but so strong you can t break it. Holds an edge well, and is easier to sharpen tha some of the other steels mentioned. A great working knife.

I guess that most of the brands will have at least one knife which could fullfil your needs perfectly fine. It is more about personal preferences than anything else. My suggestion is to handle as many models as possible and make your pick. A good store could probably be your best bet. Having a beer with another forumite which might live close to you is another one.

Personally, I think that you can get much more KNIFE for the same money if you go with spyderco. One of the basic, well proven models, such as the ENDURA FFG would be my choice. Any other ful flat ground blade is going to be a good slicer for cardboard BUT the Military, Paramilitary, Manix, etc are going to be more expensive.

BTW... how did you come up with such a nickname? For those not familiar with spanish... it means GuyWithAShotgun...

Mikel (from Spain)

The HK 14715 would be a very good choice. It's a very solid knife.

With a little digging online you can get the H&K, a Spyderco Sharp Maker, and the extra CBN rods for close to your $200 max limit.

Mine doesn't get all that much use since I really love my Emerson Mini CQC 15 and Spyderco Paramilitary 2. But I do like it a lot more than my Spyderco Manix 2.

All good choices in the 3.5"ish blade range.

DON'T get an Adamas if you do a lot of cardboard cutting. That's my main EDC task and the Adamas is a beast, but the geometry sucks for tasks like that.

Manix 2 XL. No toughness worries with that, great geometry for cutting cardboard and just about anything else, avaliable for easily within your price range. It's a workhorse and one that nothing has really been able to kick out of my pocket. Includijg the Adamas.

Hey TioConEscoPeta, based on your original post "My knife usage for this particular job includes cutting of various materials such as rope, paracord, zip ties, plastic straps, and a heckuva lot of cardboard."

Have you thought about a serrated edge or partially serrated edge?

Trust me, I wasn't a big fan of serrations until I tried them out. The serrations will make your cutting tasks so much quicker and easier regardless of which knife and or steel you choose. Sharpening will be less frequent vs plain edge, and easy once you get the hang of it. I use a sharpmaker btw.

Just a thought...and good luck with your choice!

Will disagree with that. Think Adamas is more than fine cardboard eviscerator. But is a pouch knife imo. Too big/heavy for pocket if running around. Rift would be a better slicer, but Adamas feels like it's form fitted to my hand in every grip. If get 275 convex edge to be more slicey. Adamas is great, but if had to pick one knife for slicing/cutting thangs (lightweight edc ) it would be a cold steel Talwar. Zips through anything like a lazer, very durable, lightweight, fairly cheap xhp steel.

Probably worst photo ever taken.

Get an Adamas! Think if I was a mailman though a Talwar or Holdout would be my work carries.

All good suggestions here.

My recommendation would be once you've narrowed it down to the final few make your way to a brick and motar store and handle the "chosen ones". Test the ergonomics, easy of opening, general feel and the overall aesthetics. I find by handling them in person is really can sway my opinion in a knife purchase.
Cross reference that with the giving info on Bladefroums here and you will be good to go for a solid choice.

The manix 2 g-10 is a tank! Definitely not delicate by any stretch, and cuts like a laser. Its my work knife, along with my newly acquired benchmade barrage. Also a slicey tank.

I would get the HK Axis - tough as hell, great size, great stout blade, G10 scales, Axis lock, about $100 and it's made by Benchmade.

It falls right in between the Grip and the Adamas. A tad bit bigger and beefier than the Grip but lighter, smaller and probably just as durable as the Adamas.

Edit: Yes, get the Sharpmaker as well. Works great and it's really quick and easy to use.

The grip is a helluva knife! But the Adamas goes with me everywhere!
