Good EDC

Hello all, I’m sure this has been posted here before and I did do a search but could not find the answer I need. I was wondering what would make for the best edc Busse? All that I’m looking to do with it is everyday chores that I would otherwise do with a 3 – 4” folder – but I don’t want to worry about a lock. Chores might be whittling wood, making marshmallow sticks, cutting plastic or cb boxes, light-camp duty, s/d (not that s/d is on the top of my list, but ya never know), and etcetera. I would like it to be on the thick end rather than the thin as well; .20 (maybe an AD .15 – not sure though). What would be my best option, a GW, Duty model, Meaner (where I’m leaning), Public D, or other? Any suggestions would be great! $200 - $400 (tops) – 3” – 5” (tops) Thanks,

Joe

FWIW, I have an HR, (a Cultie and Uncle Mojo on the way)

i edc a game warden or a skeleton warden for use at work and couldnt be happier with them. for outdoorsy stuff, hiking fishing hunting i carry a little bigger, like a badger or lean mean street.

I would recommend a Gamewarden. They are great EDC. I have a thin and FAT one that I rotate. Love em both.

BN,

Based on what you want a small knife to do, I recommend the new Swamp Rat Hairy Carry.

It is not INFI. It is 154CM. But, it is a GREAT design and 154CM is a very good quality stainless steel with good edge properties that is more than sufficient (for most people) for a smaller EDC type blade. It can be had for $138.95 - Well below your max price. And you can pre-Order it now.

See: http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=006151;p=1

Search Swamp Rat forums for some more pics recently posted by some people just starting to receive shipments.

The Scrap Yard Mud Puppy should be available soon at a reasonable price of $89.95.

See: http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Knives&Number=189604&page=1&fpart=1

Again, not INFI. But, a great design. Many people LOVE mudder grip handles. But, some don't and prefer micarta. But, the Mud Puppy is basically an AD blade shape on a Mudder style handle for a LOT less. Again, 154CM should be great steel for a smaller EDC blade.

If you insist on INFI for a smaller EDC, I like the Scrap Yard SS4. The SS4 is a Res-C mudder handled version of the Meaner, but with a functional choil. The SS4 sales for about $200 or so on the Bladeforums exchange. (sometimes....)

The Swamp Rat HRLM is an awesome knife and blade IMO. It is SR-101 which is a very good knife steel. Search the Swamp Forum for a lot of pics and reviews.

The AD is my favorite Busse/INFI small blade, but I personally don't like the non-functioning choil/Talon Hole combos on these smaller blades (fine with me for 5.5" + blades or so.).
Many others love the AD, Meaner and Game Warden and don't seem to mind the Talon Hole/choil combo.
The Game Warden's handle doesn't fit my hand quite right, but the AD and Meaner handles are excellent   (... except for the Talon Hole/Choil issue. :( ....... Again, some people don't mind...)

The ABA (Anorexic Badger Attack) from a few years ago is very nice if you can find one. They aren't cheap IMO. But, the HRLM is a very good alternative at a much better price.

**** Right now, you might consider waiting for the Busse SAR4 and the MiniMuk. ;) There have been some proto pics of the MiniMuk posted, but I don't know if that will be the final design. I don't think any pics of the SAR4 have been posted. I am anxious to see what it might look like.

Good luck.

An Uncle Mofo!?! Where did you score that? :grumpy: Been looking for one for a while now.

Nice score.

I prefer the AD handles to the GW ones; that run of BADs from about a month ago are absolutely top-notch. Culties are also an excellent choice; I held some at Knob Creek and found their handles to be quite comfortable, although I don't own one -- if you receive yours soon, you may find you've already got what you're looking for. I prefer thin bladed EDCs; if you like a thicker blade, then an AD is a fine choice, and if you're willing to go a little larger, then the LMS is also a great knife.

My bad, Uncle MoJo :foot:

Thanks for the replies everyone, keep em coming!

DWRW,
Great post and thanks for the pics and sites, they really helped! I was looking for INFI, but that price is great! Sweet looking knife!

I should probably also mention that my hands are not huge but bigger than average. That's what has me concerned about a GW.

Im going to go ahead and suggest you get my favorite EDC knife...

It IS INFI. Its Busse Combat and it rocks.

the Busse Scotch Dispenser. You can buy this knife from the company store as we speak. I have purchased 3 of them and they are, to me, the perfect EDC knife. Some find the grip odd but I find it great because I feel like I can get a great hold on the knife when cutting. Its rides well and go unnoticed all day long. Makes for a killer piece man, and once again, ITS INFI!!!!

I am really liking my SS (Sus Scrofa) right now. It has really impressed me with slicing and good fine point control. Functional choil , even for my sausage fingers. It is a bit long in over all length for pocket carry (and local laws for a hidden blade). Box cutting, fuzzy sticks, wood shaping etc have all been great so far. I am still planning on a Game warden or Scotch Dispenser or possibly AD for pocket carry also

I EDC a Culti, and I love it. I've been carrying a BAD around to see if it would replace the Culti, and so far I've just added another blade to my EDC collection.

When I get a sheath I'll be trying out a Sus Scrofa, and as long as it rides comfortyably that will be what I stay with. It is a slicing machine.

i hate the SS threads.....

why?

because the more i read about how great a knife and slicer they are, the more i want to just buy one :(

Active Duty. It's by far my favorite Busse knife (if you don't count the AK, which isn't really a "knife" per se).

1. The blade shape is wide yet pointy, perfect for heavy stabbing and cutting. The standard thickness AD is chunky enough to also do small prying jobs if needed.

2. The handles are fairly thick and broad for a small knife, and are very comfortable when you're doing heavy slicing (through leather, thick canvas, thick cardboard, etc).

3. The overall size is small enough that a sheathed AD will fit in your pocket, yet it is hefty enough to withstand some crazy abuse.

4. Everyone knows they rock, so if you buy one and beat the crap out of it so can still sell it later and get your money back at the very least.

I use mine for a large number of chores. My standard ADs are a bit thicker than I like, so I am having Ban give them an extreme makeover. My BAD is thinner so you might not want one, but so far it is my most handy tool of the bunch.

Presently, many standard ADs can be found on the forum for around $200. The sage ADs and muddy ADs are all over the place like weeds, so you should be able to pick if you want a greenish knife or a brown one.

The Busse Company Store also has some AD sheaths for around $40.

This will give you some serious EDC knife power in a concealable package at a reasonable price, and Busse's warranty will cover the knife if you unintentionally destroy it.

I was just looking at 1 of the ADs..... The muddy ones look amazing.

I carried a GW for awhile and I like it just fine but after a I got my AD, my GW was demoted to display fixture until next hunting season.

I do like the looks of the Meaners and have a SS4 in INFI but haven't picked the Meaner up yet so I don't know how it feels compared to the AD but the AD feels and works very very well for me as a edc.

I carry mine inside the waistband thanks to a sweet Rainwalker sheath and don't tuck in my shirt, love it.

Good luck

First idea would be an active duty.

Then a Leaner Meaner Street.

Then a Sus Scrofa or Game Warden.

Warden is low on the list only because you said you're leaning towards the Meaner.

Helle, that is a VERY nice sheath you got from Jeff. He does great work. He made a sheath for one of my SD's and it carries great. I think I am going to have Jeff make me a leather sheath similar to yours for my Sus Scrofa whenever I take the plunge and buy one

Since it's arrival, my GW has been clipped to mt belt. The AD, is a good choice also.

Thanks for the responses everyone! The Cultie just arrived in the mail today and boy is that a sweet knife! I very well may have to get another for edc (this one is beautiful - black paper micarta w/ mosiac pins, satin finish - Thanks Mark :D). So, I'm pretty much back to exactly where I started; an AD, MS/MrS, Cultie or possibly a Hairy Carry or SS4. I'll figure something out. Thanks again everybody!!!

AD is great all purpose - want a little longer etc MrS. Many of the culties are purtier than you normally carry for EDC. Botht he Hairy Carry or some of the new dogs are great and the handles are great shock asorbers when you do not want to mar the wood or micarta. Just my nickle for what I have in the car with the all propose tools.
