Any recommendatins on small, like 4" or less, field sharpening rod?
Something I can carry with me fishing and sharpen my filet knife?

There are many.. was just looking if anyone had 'great' experience with any in particular?
thanks in advance..

I have used an EZ lap diamond for many years and it has worked good. The rod threads back into the handle when you are not using it. There are probably better ones but I have used this one since I was a kid.

I second the EZ lap diamond. They make really good pocket sharpeners. Thats what I bought a gerber diamond rod sharpener once and all it did was tear up blades .

That's the one I use. Also Lansky makes a good and also Chef's Choice.

My Eze-Lap is about 25 years old ,now worn very fine , just right for a fine serrated edge .

I wash mine off with some Dawn detergent a couple times a year to dislodge the fine steel that can clog it up.

thanks for the info.. the EZ has great reviews all over.. some are even in use at meat plants for 25 years!.. that is amazing..
great info..

I still have my EZe-lap that I purchased back in 1977. If there are better field sharpeners I have not found it yet!

That's amazing you guys that have been using them for over 20 years. I've had mine for about 4 years. I remember Randall Knives had some in pockets on the front of their sheaths.

Another vote for the EZ-lap. It's amazed me that it still does its job well after 25 years. Money very well spent!

DMT makes a couple of small diamond stones that are very nice for taking into the field. The one that I use has a stone that is about 5-6 inches long and the handle folds over the stone, basically just like the handles of a butterfly knife fold over the blade.

My 31 year old Diamond EZe-Lap is better now than it was when new. The reason as it gets worn in the coarse diamond coating becomes finer and knives sharpen easier and quicker. I just thought for those not aware on how to clean the following is my method. When it becomes filled with repeated use I take an wet SOS pad and it cleans it up in a few seconds. Comet on a sponge works just as well to clean the metal and carbon out of the diamond pores.

Thanks for the tip. I used B. Finnigan's suggestion and cleaned with liquid soap. What a difference after cleaning. It works as if new again.
