I am an Army ROTC student trying to find a good folding blade knife for use in the field. Price is not an issue. I want a strong, sharp, durable knife that I can depend on and will keep an edge. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

BUCK 110, Start there...

CRK Sebenza's Large or Small if $$$$ is not an issue...

Buck 110:thumbup: The Kershaw ZT knives are great, as are the Spyderco and Benchmade knives. Fallkniven makes some very nice folders also. I would also add some sort of multitool. My favorite is the Leatherman suoertool.

Swiss tool (multi tool) or Champ , comes to mind. I use mine in conjunction with a good 4 -5 inch fixed blade. Ex. Gerber Lmf 2 , or RC- 4 or RC-3 both of these would be easily concealed as well...

All of the knives FUDO mentioned rock.

Emerson CQC-12 is my favorite so far...easy to clean, tough, and well made.

I'd put some of these on the short list, too:

Benchmade 710
Spyderco military
ZT 302
Microtech SOCOM Elite

Spyderco Military. Durable ultra-light folder, which is also quite large. Buy yourself a multi-tool too, quite a few soldiers can't live without them.

Leatherman Wave or Charge (w/ 154cm blade) is a must and probably all you 'need.'

After that, I'm diggin' my Lone Wolf T2 ranger -- would be a good field knife -- but you just can't beat a Buck 110.

My 3 Favorites are

Strider AR
CRK Sebenza (Standard not classic)
Benchmade Rukus

The Rukus and AR are BIG folders... but they're built like tanks. The Sebenza is smaller and well made. All would serve you well and last a lifetime if cared for.

Al Mar Sere or Mini Sere, designed by former Green Beret Al Mar. These are very high quality knives for serious people.

Even with price not being an issue, maybe a truly expensive knife will detract you from using it to its full potential. I would say the Military is a great knife but it has a full flat and a point suited for piercing and not so much for prying, so keep that in mind. The saber grind of an Endura makes a stouter blade (slices worse, but that's the trade off).

If you want another workhorse, you might look at the ZT line but from an engineering point of view, the more complex something is, the more chances of a screw up you have. I am talking about the assited opening ones. You might not be able to baby it and clean it good in the field. The ZT MUD folder seems to be impervius to debrish though.

I would say a multitool (Charge TTI with s30v blade if you want to get fancy) and a Buck or Opinel Nº10 for food prep should get you there. You will get three blades for half the money you expect to pay for some of the models mentioned here.

You mentioned that price is not an issue, but it's hard to beat a Spyderco Native from big-mart for under 40 bucks to keep in your pocket. The CPMS30V blade holds an edge well and is my favorite EDC for one-handed cutting chores. For the price, you can get several and keep them stashed in your glove compartment, bug-out bag, etc. as a "back up" to something bigger.
