Good files

Hey, I'm thinking about getting into knife making/modifying, and I thought filework might be a good place to start. I was hoping some people here might be able to recommend some good files to use. Also any tutorials which might be helpful, I'm really more of a learn by doing guy though, so perhaps a good place to get scrap metal.

Don't be tempted to get cheap files. Nicholson files are about the best you can get and can be found at any home improvement type store. A pack of needle files are about $20 and flat files range between $5-$7 depending on what size you get. Round Files are a little cheaper depending on the size too. One Nicholson will outlast any Husky or other cheap brands 3-1. If you have a steel supply place around mild steel is cheap if you want to practice. 1"X1/8" is less than $1 a foot depending on the amount you buy (they charge you to cut it if you don't buy a full stick). Also I notice you said "modifying". If the blade is hardened you will wear out a pack of files in no time and get bad results trying. That's just my two cents though.

I still say that Sears (or K-mart now) Crafstman brand files are the most durable I've ever seen!

File gets dull, and oops! I just got frustrated enough that I threw the thing, and well, being hard as hell and brittle too, they tend to break. Back to Sears I go!
