My birthday is coming up soon, Oct. 20th, and I'm going to buy an inexpensive slipjoint with some of the leftover money. I'm not looking to spend more than $40. I want it to have no more than two blades, and each blade has to be at least 2.5" I don't know much about patterns, so I don't know which patterns and what closed size I should use for this size blade. What size blade does a Sodbuster Jr. have, for instance? Also, what brands should I look at? I know Case, but what about Boker and the many other brands?

If your looking for a Sodbuster style knife, take a look at the Queen Country Cousin, about little more expensive but you get a much better blade steel.

hey bro ur bday is the 20th too? man i have never met a person with the same birthday as me. were gonna have a good monday me thinks. and dude, get a full size trapper in cv. i love my amber bone one, but yellow handle ones are great too.

Case Sodbuster Jr is 2.5" from tip to tang. I like the yellow CV model for general use (seems easier to maintain a sharp edge), the SS model for more corrosive environments (such as salt water fishing).

I have a Case mini-Trapper in CV and it's really a great little knife. Probably my favorite production slipjoint.

Welcome to the forums, Washington. You'll like it here.

Two blades, min. 2.5" each? Sounds like you need a Case yellow-handled Trapper to me. I'd recommend carbon steel blades, but Case's stainless has performed pretty well for me too.

Whatever you get, put her to work. And let us know how it goes!

thx - cpr

How much does a full sized CV trapper go for? The lowest I've found is around $30 shipped. That sound right?

Make that three of us. Now, if I could only find a way to get myself something nice....I have been wanting to try out something from Great Eastern.

$30-$40. sounds about right, depending on scale material. For really nice scales, cost goes up quite a bit.

Check out the MooreMaker patterns at mooremaker.com. The quality is great, the prices are fair plus the blades are 1095 steel.

Hi,

Will this be your general purpose knife? If yes, the trapper is good choice, if not, you might consider fooling around with more specialized patterns. I'm very satisfied with my Case medium texas toothpick for a very specialized purpose: food :)
I always carry a more robust locking folder as a work knife and they are great, but I really enjoy eating with the texas toothpick. IMHO it is a beautiful pattern. Similar to a laguiole but the blade tang disappears into the handle when knife is closed, thus the closed knife is extremely slim and pocketable.

Happy birthday! :)

You might want to take a look at Boker. They have many attractive, tradtional patterns of good quality in your price range. I had one of their copperheads for awhile (similar to a trapper), and I have a small stockman. Many of the Boker traditional knives have carbon blades, which many prefer to stainless.

Yea, Just get a Yellow Case mini trapper or pen knife in CV. That will be a good starting point...then it's all over...sorry bro...

You cant go wrong with any of the case offerings.
Here are most case patterns to compare: click

This here would be right at the 40$ mark.

Tell us what you chose.

Hard to beat a Case CV Trapper. However, my next purchase will be a Case CV Moose! Seems to be about the same size as the Trapper (+/- 1/8"), same blades just opposite open from one another. Good luck, M

+1. I've found more patterns in carbon steel with Boker than with Case. Fit & finish, walk & talk, all good. If you're okay with stainless, look at Case, they have some stunning colors in bone. But for a good, sturdy user I always seem to end up with a Boker.

How do Boker knives compare to Case in terms of quality BESIDES the steel? I found a yellow delrin handled Case full sized trapper for LESS than I have a Boker black delrin full sized trapper, both carbon.
