Good fixed blade for around $50-$60?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Where would be a good place to get a Mora 2000, I didn't see them at ragweedforge? I really like the AG Russel Deer Hunter, anyone have one these? If so, how do you like it. If I do get the Deer Hunter, what steel would you reccommend, VG-10 or D2? Keep the suggestions coming.

How bout a short Ka-bar with 5" blade. Around $40.

I haven't seen any mention of the Cold Steel bushman. It cost under $20 and if you watch knifetest.com you can tell that the bushman is one tough SOB. If you ever get around to breaking it, well $20 well spent!

I agree. It's a  lot of bang for the buck.

I'm liking Pitdog's idea. I also think A Kabar might work real well in this price range.

Hey BJE,
To answer your question about the S-1, it's all about how you plan to use it. The S-1 is a helluva cutter, and is styled more traditionally. However, I have heard rumors that it's blade edge is somewhat brittle, given the high Rockwell of 61-62 (according to Ragnar). So it may not be the right choice for a survival type knife. The Mora 2000 has a thicker blade, is stainless (the s-1 is carbon I believe), and has a funky handle (but it is grippy), and looks kind of strange and modern. I think the Mora 2000 will do just about anything you ask of it within reason. but the S-1 is also a very good knife for most applications.

The Grohmann DH Russell knives are excellent and they have full tangs that make them much sturdier than the Moras….you even can get them in easy to assemble kit form for very little $.

The SOG Hunter Revolver and the Spyderco Moran are very nice also.

I won't be using it for really hard things, I have a RAT-7 in D2 for that. I am looking for a really good slicer (like an fixed blade Opinel). I would like Carbon steel or a good hard stainless/tool steel, and a thin but stiff blade (not like a fillet knife). I like the Mora #S-1, but not the sheath, and it is hard for me to justify spending just as much on the sheath as he knife. Can anyone tell me how well the sheaths for the mora's work?

Would D2 or VG-10 be the better choice for the AG Russel Deer Hunter? I got a used SOG Seal Pup today, and it is almost the perfect knife, except for the partial serrations and the somewhat obtuse angle.

I have 3 ontario blades all with 1095 steel. All for less than $60 each from the knife center. Their blades are too long for you but you would be happy with the steel. I've ordered a RAT-3 with D2 steel and should have it soon. It was $75 plus shipping. Ontario and K-bar 1095 steel works for me and I don't think you'll find a better camp knife for less money than from these 2 companies. Best wishes on this......
